The new windows you install will make your house quieter beautiful, attractive and less drafty. And they don't need painting. They are also cleaner than older windows that have combination screens and storm windows and help reduce the carbon footprint of your home.
We test 21 double-hung windows and four casement windows to determine whether they could withstand weather and wind. These are the most common configurations. There were notable differences between the kinds of frames and the brands we tested. In conjunction with an outside laboratory, we exposed the windows to severe rainfall, driven by wind, and to winds of 25 and 50 mph in temperatures ranging from zero degrees F and 70 degrees F.
There are a lot of aspects to take into consideration when you are replacing windows. We can help you select the right windows for your house if you are looking to replace windows. Here are the facts.
Price doesn't indicate performance
The least rated, most expensive and the most costly double-hung clad wooden window, the Andersen $500 wasn't very effective at keeping out rain and cold. A $450 Kolbe double-hung made of vinyl was impressive and a highly rated $260 Simonton was even better. All the casement windows aced all tests. Prices differ depending on the frame material. The American Craftsman vinyl window with the highest score, $260, is the highest priced. All prices are for a 3-by-5-foot window. Find windows that match climate
Check out our overall window Ratings and then narrow down on the results of tests which are applicable to your particular location. If your house is subject to extreme temperatures and winds Look for windows that have excellent low-temperature wind resistance.
Do not overspend on options
An upgrade can easily increase the cost of a window by 50 % or more. Focus on features that add value. Low-E coatings improve efficiency, but triple glazing is not required unless you're in a cold climate. The tilting of double-hung windows make it easier to clean. The full screens permit optimal airflow when the windows on the top and bottom are raised and lowered. Finer meshed screens let more light in and do not obscure the view as much as the standard screens.
Anatomy of a Window
1. Frames are used to provide framework.
2. Cladding is used to protect the exterior of a wooden or composite window. It is comprised of aluminum, vinyl or fiberglass. It eliminates the need for painting.
3. Sash is the part that moves of the window; it can be tilted to allow for easy cleaning.
4. Insulated glass Double-glazed windows have an enclosed space between two panes of glass filled with air or a gas which is more insulating than air. Argon gas is included on a lot of window windows, but the energy savings aren't enough to justify paying for it.
5. Low-E coating is transparent and increases the efficiency of the glass by reflecting heat yet let light through. The coating is applied to the outside of glass in warmer climates in order to reflect sun's heat away. In cooler regions, it's applied to the inside glass to help keep heat inside.
6. Grilles are decorative and can come in various patterns to complement the architectural style.
Get to know the numbers
These numbers are on Energy Star and National Fenestration Rating Council window labels:
U-factor, also known as U-value, typically ranges from 0.20 up to 1.20. The lower the number is, the better the window will be at keeping heat in.
The solar heat gain coefficient varies from 0 to 1. The window's ability to block heat that is unwanted from the sun is better if the value is lower than one. In warmer areas, you'll need the lowest number you can find while in colder regions the higher number is more effective.
Visible transmittance measures of how much light a window allows in. It can be anywhere from 0 to 1. The intensity of light increases as the number goes up.
