Richard Ungewitter’s seminal work Die Nacktheit (1906 / Nakedness), went through many printings. Nudism spread through Europe after World War I and became established in North America during the 1930s. The American League of Physical Culture, founded in 1929, was established to promote nudism. In the United States, Canada, the practice has been limited to a few isolated camps or beaches. I have been all over the world, and have skinny-dipped through a dozen different countries before ever finding a nudist resort. I was researching my dissertation on the gymnosophists, naked philosophers Alexander the Great met in India. I made arrangements to travel down here to do my research.
The song quickly rose to the top on the Billboard music charts, selling more than a million copies in 1948. Public nudity in varying degrees has become more common over the last 20 years, but nudist girls is still not widely accepted. Most nudists can be adults, but families may also participate. Current research has begun to explore this complex relationship. Richard Ungewitter published two books, citing nudity as the key to a long and happy existence.
As a result, human strangers could be photographed within the same frame and were safe to be there. The fog on location is the unifying visual motif, conveying the sense of an ever-increasing limbo, a once-recognizable world now fading from view. However, despite their respective losses, these people and animals have survived, and therein lies possibility and hope. Whether this led to greater bodily liberation, especially for the young women who are most likely to be depicted, was a question raised by feminists at the time, and it remains open for debate. Even though permissive boundaries were broken and greater bodily visible was allowed, the trajectory for nude depiction has not always been straight forward.

This has been repeated many times per year, and has grown to become one of largest gatherings of young naturalists in the country. Albert and Christine Lecocq had been active members of many clubs but split after disagreements. They founded the Club du Soleil in 1944 with members in 84 locations. They founded the Federation Francaise de Naturisme in 1948. In 1949 they published Vie au Soleil. In 1950 they opened the CHM Montalivet. This was the first naturist holiday resort in the world. Organized naturism was established in Belgium in 1924 by Joseph-Paul Swenne, an engineer who founded the Belgian League of Heliophilous Propaganda (often abbreviated to Helios), in Uccle near Brussels. Four years later, Jozef Geertz founded De Spar. It was located on the country estate Oswald Johan de Schampelaere. Belgian naturism was influenced in equal part by French naturism and German Freikorperkultur. The Federatie van Belgische Naturisten represents today's Belgian naturists.
