It is the responsibility of any car owner to make sure that the car they own is well taken care of and maintained. Good care of a car should involve using proper spares, not used ones from a junkyard. Ignoring the care and maintenance of your car puts you at risk of having accidents or having law enforcement on your case. Many of us do not pay sufficient attention to the care and maintenance of the cars that we own and drive. It is not difficult for a person to invest in a huge and luxurious car, but we will not be quick to maintain these vehicles at the expected standards. If you would disagree with this, it might mean that you take good care of your vehicle. In that case, you should be congratulated, but what about those who do not care about their cars' health?

Most of the large junkyards use a system called a "Hotline." If you call a junkyard and ask whether they carry a certain part, they'll check their inventory database while you're on the phone. If they don't find the part you need in their inventory, they can use their Hotline to quickly check the inventories of neighboring budget auto wrecking. A quick tip about the Hotline: ask the junkyard that is checking other yards what that particular part would have cost if they had it in their inventory. You may be able to negotiate the price with the other dealer.

When I was a teenager (in the 60's,) I used to dream of someday having my own car. I found an old copy of a popular automotive catalog with little black & white pictures, and wore it out looking at all the cool parts I would buy someday. Well, a few years later, my dream came true. I found a 1959 MG, black with red leather interior and wire wheels; very good condition, for only $600! I borrowed some money from my dad, and drove it home.

You may have to visit a few salvage yards to get everything you need, but that's part of the process and can actually be fun. It's a project you may even want to get your kids involved with.

There is no need for concern. Aftermarket car parts are produced with the same machinery and materials as OEM and genuine parts. While the parts may have a few minor differences in look and feel, they basically do the same job. The companies who manufacture these aftermarket auto parts are credible. They legitimately buy the rights to manufacture those parts.

In most cases, the part you need will come with a short-term warranty. However, it is a better idea to find out if the company offers a return policy.
