Let me tell you my experience from my last Arctic cruise. It sounded amazing, National Geographic trip thru the ice and back, including polar bears, as well as numerous other animals. There would be the ice where eyes can see snow, ice, and ice everywhere. Man-made machines would fight the elements to get through the frozen north. It sounded like an enormous project, a massive combat with the weather as well as the pole.

I was advised by my boss to bring everything I had access to. I did carry my laptop along and added a huge display to make the room more spacious. It was all electric, as they told me. I was unsure what was in store for me. I was unaware that I would lose my internet connection two days into my 14 day journey and disappear completely from Earth for the following ten days. It was a shock to me when it was happening. No trip, however hard or remote, shouldn't result in an abrupt disconnect from the technological world, not in 21st century. In addition, I've got unfinished work to handle over the next week however, I haven't prepared myself for the time off.

There is no need to leave the house. Internet is everywhere even in the case that your home network is experiencing issues there are plenty of nearby McDonalds which offer free WiFi access. You can also bring your laptop to lounge in Starbucks all day. There is no restaurant or café that is able to provide electricity in the north. It's not near any electricity source. There's not a free Internet. In such situations there are 2 escape routes that you can take: either prepare to be offline from home, or carry a satellite connection.


I am unable to afford a satphone, it is expensive, especially for Internet. But, I'm planning to create a massive audio and video collection for the next time I venture to the far reaches of the world without Internet access. Last time I had 2 songs that were both mockingly downloaded in the past and all I was able to listen to was three jazzy songs, and a song that I had no idea what it was called. That's it. Four songs over two weeks of total silence. If I knew that this was likely to be the situation, I would be prepared. I would have loaded my laptop with television shows, and music videos. My most loved podcasts were ones that I could listen to for hours. It's easy to download them, then convert to mp3 and save them on my computer. Then, I can just lie on my couch and listen to podcasts that I enjoy at home. It would have been my golden hour or two weeks of gold. But it was actually two weeks of looking at the ceiling and running to catch passengers each whenever a sound makes its way through the corridors..

I was sure that the issue will eventually be due to the thick ice, so the boat had turn around and be pulled back to the shores of civilization. While this isn't surprising however, there were plenty of other alternatives. Hours and hours of downtime could be spent listening to podcasts or DIY videos on fixing things at home, or listening music.
