Marami pang mga adbenturerong mga Portuges ang nagsipagtatag ng mga kolonya sa Timog-Kanlurang India, kung kaya't noong 1524, ipinadala si Da Gama sa India bilang biseroy o maharlikang gobernador. Sumakabilang buhay siya habang nasa India noong 1524.
