Meski bernama kepiting api, hewan ini amat menyerupai kura-kura besar dengan
tempurung dipenuhi batu-batu permata, berkaki 6 seperti kepiting.
Matanya berwarna hitam dan berkulit
abu-abu. Di tempat asalnya, Fiji,
sebentang pantai telah di ubah
menjadi cagar alam untuk melindunginya. Bukan hanya dari para muggle yang mungkin tergoda dengan tempurungnya yang berharga, melainkan juga dari para penyihir jahat yang memanfaatkan
tempurungnya sebagai kuali bernilai tinggi.
Walaupun demikian, kepiting api punya mekanisme pertahanan sendiri : Bila diserang, hewan ini menembakkan lidah api dari ekornya.
Dengan surat izin khusus, kepiting api
bisa di ekspor sebagai hewan
peliharaan. Ada 3 jenis Fire Crab
dilihat dari berlian dicangkangnya,
Ruby, Sapphire, dan Emerald.
Pada tahun ke 5 Harry di Hogwarts, saat
Ujian Pemeliharaan Satwa Gaib,
mereka diminta untuk memberi makan
dan membersihkan seekor Kepiting
Api tanpa mengalami luka bakar yang
serius. Namun sayang sekali, kami
tidak bisa menemukan apa makanan
Fire Crab.
