Some additional information I would like to know more about would be about how did Mrs. Mallard get her heart trouble? what was the cause of it.? I would also want to know more about the setting, how did it look like? were did her sister and her husband's friend tell her the horrible news.? I supposed Chopin didn't want to include any of this information because he thought it wasn't necessary and he wanted to get straight to the point meaning that he didn't want to add any extra information.
2. "The story of an hour" is a very economical story, with little action or dialogue. Do you see this economy as a strength or a weakness? Explain.
I see the story as a strength because it was part of the author's plan to make it very economic so that the story can be rapid and get to the point without getting a lot of unnecessary information and make the story longer than necessary. Being a strength because it gives a lot of information in such a short story.
3. When "The story of an Hour" was first published in Vogue magazine in 1894, the magazine's editors titled it "The dream of an hour." A film version, echoing the last words of the story, is called The Joy That kills. Which of the three titles do you believe most accurately represents what happens in the story? Why?
I would believe the title The joy the kills because it talks about Mr. and Mrs. Mallard's death and now Mr. Mallard is really not dead and she dies of joy.
4. Do you think Brently Mallard physically abused his wife? Did he love her? Did she love him? Exactly why was she so relieved to be rid of him? Can you answer any of these questions with certainty?
In my opinion, I don't think Mr. Mallard physically abused his wife, on the contrary, I think that he loved her a lot. It's just that back then women didn't have enough freedom. But in reality, we could never know the truth because there is not enough evidence to support the claim.
5. What is the nature of the conflict in this story? Who, or what, do you see as Mrs. Mallard's antagonist?
The nature of the conflict in the story would be women vs society. In this case, it would be Mrs. Mallard vs the society she lives in. and Mr. Mallard would be the antagonist in this case.
6. What emotions does Mrs. Mallard experience during the hour she spends alone in her room? What events do you imagine take place during this same period outside her room? outside her house?
The emotion Mrs. Mallard experiences during the hour she spends alone in her room would be depression. The events I imagine taking place during the same period outside her house would be other women kind of experiencing the same problem about not having as much freedom.
7. Do you find the story's ending satisfying? believable? contrived?
I find the story's ending satisfying because I never expected it to end that way.
8. Was the story ending unexpected, or were you prepared for it? What elements in the story foreshadow the ending?
Yes, the ending was unexpected, I was not prepared for it. Some elements that foreshadow the ending would be Mrs. Mallard's heart problem. We knew that it was bad because her sister tried to tell her the news about her husband as gently as possible. And we knew that any hard and unexpected news can damage her.
