All About Kosher Salt
Kosher salt is a coarse-grain natural mineral which is originally used for removing excess surface blood from slaughtered animals. It contains sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, phosphorus, potassium chloride, and calcium chloride in varying amounts depending on where it was mined. Today, kosher salt is used as an alternative to table salt or in place of table salt in cooking, baking, and grating foods. Most kosher salts contain trace amounts of manganese and zinc.

In addition to being used as an additive to food, kosher salt also has other uses. Many Jewish families still keep kosher salt in their kitchen pantry for preserving family traditions and for kosher dietary purposes. Some kosher salts have been separated from rock salt, known as "kardash," and are now used as sea salt or table salt. Salt contains trace amounts of both sodium and chloride. So, although kosher sea salt and table salt contain the same amount of sodium and chloride, kosher salt has a higher concentration of sodium than sea salt.

There are two kinds of kosher salts: kosher salt, also called sea salt or kosher salt, and kosher (or sea) salt. Each type contains different minerals. Rock salt contains a higher concentration of sodium and chloride. It may be brown, grey, white, or even green in color. Sea salt tends to be transparent and its color depends on the levels of iodine that the seawater contains.

Iodine is essential to human life, but too much of it can cause deficiencies in those without thyroid problems. That's why it's important to know how coarse-grained your salt is, because that's part of what makes it effective in removing toxins from the body. The higher the concentration of iodine in kosher salt, the more effective it will be at removing toxins. However, just about any type of salt will have some amount of iodine.

Most kosher salt is extracted from sea water. However, certain types of kosher salt do contain a small amount of ground up plankton. The idea behind this is to ensure that the salt is as pure as possible since kosher salt deposits are more concentrated than seawater. Many kosher salts use potassium or sodium chloride instead of salt crystals in their process, though some use both salts.

Some of the most effective kosher salt has been purified with various filtering processes. The first filtering step removes any impurities, including iron, that could potentially cause an allergic reaction. As the water passes through a special filtering machine, any remaining impurities are filtered out of the water. In many cases, the machine also exchanges the sodium and chloride ions for potassium and magnesium. Purified kosher salt has the highest purity of any salt.

Kosher salt contains trace minerals such as boron, magnesium, iodine, and calcium. Trace minerals are beneficial because they help your body absorb nutrients more efficiently. For example, calcium helps the body retain energy, magnesium helps to prevent muscle spasms, and iodine has positive effects on the thyroid gland and brain. There have been studies done to test the effectiveness of different kosher salt additives, but none have been proven yet. This may be because kosher salt doesn't contain any additives like artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives that non-kosher salts do.

There are other kosher salts available, such as kosher and sea salt. Sea salt is less expensive than table salt and has been used for centuries by the Jewish people. While there isn't enough evidence to link the consumption of kosher salt with the development of hypertension, some physicians do believe that people who prefer sea salt over table salt are at a higher risk of heart disease. The same can be said for fine sea salt, which is not as salty as sea salt and not as refined as kosher salt.
