Ramora mirip dengan ikan remora, yang dalam bahasa latin diartikan sebagai 'Penunda'.
Hewan ini juga masuk dalam mitologi Yunani Kuno yang menyebutkan bahwa hewan ini disalahkan atas kematian Mark Antony di Pertempuran Actium dan secara tidak langsung atas kematian Caligula.
