Secara umum alat/media buat mainin musik ini dalam bentuk
disk/cakram. Karena ahli dalam memainkan cakram/disk maka dj biasa disebut disc jockey / joki cakram. Aksi fisik daripada seorang DJ adalah memilih dan memainkan rekaman-rekaman suara disebut deejaying, atau DJingdan cakupan kesempurnaan dari memainkan secara sederhana satu seri rekaman-rekaman (terkait pengacaraan, atau menyusun sebuah daftar putar, sampai memanipulasi rekaman-rekaman,menggunakan berbagai teknik sepertipengadonan
audio, pengisyaratan (cueing), pemfrasean (phrasing), pemenggalan (cutting),penggesekan (scratching), dan penyelarasan ketukan (beatmatching), atau sering juga mengacu pada membuat komposisi musik asli.
DJ sekarang banyak digemari contohnya martin garrix,DJ Snake,David Guetta,DJ Jasmine,dan masih banyak lagi. Musik yang dimainkan DJ tergolong musik elektro. Musik elektro biasanya tdk dpt dimainkan dlm piano gitar dan biasanya tdk ada notasinya.
Salah satu contoh lagu musik elektro yg tdk ada notnya contohnya lagu martin garrix yg animal sedangkan lagu yg ada notnya kaya lagu tittanium yg diaransemen david guetta. Biasanya lagu musik elektro yg memiliki notasi itu adalah lagu yg sebelumnya sudah diciptakan ttp diaramsemen.
