1. Intro


Spirit Airlines, Inc. is an American airline launched in 2011 by CEO Ron Wigle and co-founders Scott Hayes and David Keith. The airline was founded as a direct response to low fares offered by other airlines and to the lack of a dedicated domestic flight between the New York and Los Angeles metropolitan areas.
The airline’s initial focus was on expanding its service between the two airports, in early 2017 Spirit Airlines announced that it acquired full ownership of Allegiant Air from its parent company, Alaska Airlines Corporation. The carrier added new destinations to its network including Asheville, North Carolina; Las Vegas, Nevada; Orlando, Florida; and Sacramento, California.
In May 2018 Spirit Airlines announced that it was acquiring Virgin America Corporation. The deal will see Spirit Air become part of Virgin America’s network when it is completed in December


2. Spirit Airlines History


Spirit Airlines is an American air carrier headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. It offers scheduled and charter services under the Spirit and SkyMiles brands.
Spirit Airlines began as a regional airline based in Dallas and Houston during the 1940s with a fleet of Douglas DC-6 aircraft, which were delivered from Douglas Aircraft Company's Wichita Wichita Falls plant. The airline grew to be the largest domestic carrier in Texas when it merged with United Air Lines on June 1, 1987.
In the next decade, Spirit Airlines expanded its fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft to become one of the largest in its class nationwide, achieving 13 consecutive years of profitability by 2004. In April 2005, Spirit merged with United Continental Holdings (United Continental) to form United Continental Holdings Corporation (United Continental), with headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas.
The merger created one of America's largest companies in terms of revenues, market capitalization and net profit margin. In January 2007, United Continental filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection again due to the economic downturn that had started in late 2006. On February 28, 2008 Spirit Airlines announced its intention to purchase Republic Airways Holdings (RAH), a highly profitable U.S.-based low-cost carrier; however this deal would not be completed until March 2009 as part of a plan to restructure the company into two separate companies focused on direct-to-consumer travel via online reservations and charter services rather than scheduled flights.[14]
In early 2010 Spirits rebranded its operations under the new name "SkyMiles" and began offering nonstop service between Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport and Washington National Airport with an Airbus A340 aircraft.[15] In December 2010 Spirit Airlines announced plans for up to ten Boeing 757 jets from their Fort Worth facility that would begin flying as widebody jets beginning at the start of 2011.[16] On September 26 2012 Spirit Airlines announced that it had received approval from US federal regulators for an initial public offering on NASDAQ under the symbol SPIRG.[17] The IPO was completed by NASDAQ on November 13 2012,[18] raising $652 million[19].
On March 6 2016 Spirit Airlines announced that it would be ceasing all operations beginning November 16 2016 after 50 years of operating under its own name since inception.[20][21]


3. Spirit Airlines Fleet

The company had provided travel services since 2007 and raised $1 billion from investors including private equity firm Bain Capital Ventures, as well as from General Catalyst Partners, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Initialized Capital.
