Hey there!

So yes, the TEEL structure is honestly one of the worst structures I've came across. I'm really glad you've come across this earlier because I realised the TEEL structure wasn't effective half-way through Year 12. It really ruined my Unit 3 mark and stopped me from getting a 40.

Before I get into the PETAL structure, let me go through the introduction. The introduction is very, VERY important to shape your essay. It really does help to write your essay smoothly. Here's the introduction structure:

[Contention: ACTUALLY answer the questions. Many students go off on a tangent and fail to answer the actual question. It is IMPORTANT to actually answer the question. Think about it; if I ask you what the time is and you start rambling on the weather, that's not answering the question. Therefore, remember to answer the question.

Point 1: WHY is your contention correct? Give me a reason.
Point 2: WHY is your contention correct? Give me a reason.
Point 3: WHY is your contention correct? Give me a reason.]

Then, the PETAL structure follows like this:

P - point: You can directly copy/paste the points from the introduction. Remember how I said an intro saves time? Yeah this is how. If it's body paragraph 1, then you use point 1 EXACTLY from the intro. Don't need to change up any words or anything.
E - evidence: Provide quotes. Shouldn't be more than 3-4 lines.
T - Technique: This refers to metalanguage, and this is something often neglected by teachers for some reason. You NEED to mention words like metaphors, similes etc. to get the extra marks. You need to discuss why the author used that technique. I'll be posting a sample essay later on and I'll break down how to approach that.
A - Analysis: Here, you talk about author values, historical/cultural context, plot and conflict etc. This'll be covered later on.
L - Link: Literally the same as point, but you just need to word it differently.
