You may be tempted switch to electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes, vape pen, and various other non-disposable (and disposable) vaping products) as a way to simplify the transition from traditional cigarettes to not smoking at all. However, is smoking e-cigarettes (also called vaping) healthier than smoking tobacco? Could e-cigarettes assist you in quit smoking for all? Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease has shared health information regarding smoking e-cigarettes.
1: Vaping is less harmful than smokingcigarettes, but the risk is still high.
E-cigarettes warm nicotine (extracted from tobacco) in addition to flavorings and substances to produce an aerosol that you breathe in. Regular tobacco cigarettes contain 7000 chemicals, some of which are poisonous. While it's not clear the ingredients in e cigarette, Blaha says "There's almost no doubt that vaping exposes you to fewer toxic chemicals than smoking traditional cigarettes."
However, there has been a surge of lung injuries and deaths associated vaping. In February of 2020, in February 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed 28007 cases of ecigarettes and vaping use-associated Lung injury (EVALI) and 68 deaths attributed to that disease.
"These cases appear to predominantly involve people who have modified their devices to vape or use vape liquids from the black market that are modified. This is particularly true for Vaping products containing THC," explains Blaha.
The CDC has identified vitamin E Acetate as an ingredient of concern in people suffering from EVALI. Vitamin E acetate is a thickening agent often used in THC vape products. it was found in all samples of lung fluid of EVALI patients studied in the CDC.
The CDC suggests that people
Don't use e-cigarettes that contain THC (or vaping) products.
Avoid using informal sources, like relatives, friends or online dealers for smoking devices.
Do not alter or add substances to your vape device that does not belong to the manufacturer.
The study by The Johns Hopkins University on vape ingredients released in October 2021 shows thousands of chemical ingredients that are present in vape devices most of which remain unidentified. Some of the ones they could identify were several potentially harmful chemicals, including caffeine. three chemicals that have never been previously identified in e-cigarettes along with a pesticide as well as two flavorings linked with possible negative effects on breathing and respiratory irritation.
2: Research suggests that vaping is bad for your lungs and heart.
Nicotine is the principal ingredient in traditional cigarettes and e cigarettes, and it's highly addictive. It causes you to desire an cigarette and then suffer withdrawal symptoms should you not acknowledge the craving. Nicotine is a poisonous drug. It raises blood pressure and boosts your adrenaline levels, which increase your heart rate and chances of having heart attack.
Do you think that vaping is bad for you? There are many facets to consider when vaping. This includes the substances that compose the vapor and how they affect overall health in the long run. "People need to understand that e-cigarettes are potentially dangerous to your health," says Blaha. "Emerging research suggests links to lung diseases that are chronic and asthma, and links between dual use of cigarettes and smoking, as well as cardiovascular disease. You're exposed to various chemicals in which we aren't sure of the details and that are probably not harmful."
Electronic cigarettes can be just as addictive as traditional ones.
The e-cigarettes and the regular cigarettes contain nicotine, and research suggests that it may be as addictive as heroin and cocaine. Even more, says Blaha most users of e-cigarettes get even more nicotine than they would in a combustible tobacco product. You can purchase extra-strong cartridges that offer a higher level of nicotine, or raise the voltage of an e-cigarette to get more of the substance.
Electronic cigarettes aren't a great smoking quit tool.
While they've been marketed as a tool to help to quit smoking, electronic cigarettes were not granted Food and Drug Administration approval for smoking cessation devices. A recent study showed that most people who intended intending to use e cigarettes to eliminate smoking cigarettes ended up continuing to use traditional or e-cigarettes.
Based on the EVALI outbreak The CDC encourages those using electronic cigarettes for smoking cessation to assess the risks and advantages and before making a decision, consider other alternatives to smoking cessation that have been approved by FDA.
5: A new generation is getting addicted to nicotine.
Among youth, e-cigarettes, especially the disposable type, get more attention than any other tobacco-based product. In the report 2021 National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than 2 million U.S. middle and high schools reported that students were using ecigarettes in 2021. More than eight in 10 youngsters using flavored electronic cigarettes.
According to Blaha there are three motives for e-cigarettes to be very appealing to young people. First, many teens believe vaping isn't as harmful as smoking. Second, e-cigarettes have a lower cost per-use than traditional cigarettes. For the third, both adult and youth feel that the absence of smoke appealing. Without a smell, e-cigarettes help to reduce the stigma of smoking.
"What I find most concerning about the rise of vaping is that people who would've never smoked otherwise, especially youth, are taking up the habit," Blaha claims. Blaha. "It's not a problem if you quit smoking cigarettes and switch to vaping. It's something else to get started on nicotine usage with vaping. And, getting hooked on nicotine usually leads to using traditional tobacco products later on."
Research from the CDC shows that the rate of vaping among teens has declined slightly since 2020. Children who are left at home under the supervision of their parents during the COVID-19 pandemic may cause this trend.
Young people change their preferences frequently, and, if surveyed, may not consider the use of disposable products, such as "puff bars" as vaping. The same CDC report says disposable e-cigarette usage has increased by 1,000 percent among high schoolers and 400% among middle school students from 2019 onwards.
Vaping and the COVID-19 Pandemic
The coronavirus outbreak first hit, Blaha states that data shows that sales of e-cigarettes decreased perhaps due to the fact that people were staying at home and abstaining from stores and public places.
However, Blaha observes a pattern that concerns him: rising rates of daily e-cigarette consumption among almost all vape vape users. "The amount of people with a habit of vape every day was previously 1 in 5but it's now increasing quite a bit, which is worrying as it suggests more dependence on nicotine. I'm keeping an watch on that."
What Is Vaping? Everything You Need To Know
How Does Vape Work?
Vaping devices can vary in appearance, size, and colors. Devices create aerosols after heating a liquid, that is often made up of flavors and other chemicals that makes vaping less savage (initially at least) in comparison to smoking. This liquid can deliver nicotine, marijuana, or another drug to the user via a mouthpiece which is inhaled into the lungs . Then, it is expelling through the mouth or nose.
Vaping Health and Safety Risks
However, these products typically have a liquid comprising around one-third of the nicotine that is found in cigarettes for example, one JUULpod strength of 5% is created to replace an entire pack of cigarettes in the nicotine strength. However, vapers still face some health-related and safety concerns.
Nicotine, a stimulant which can cause harm to the developing brain (which grows up to about 25 years age) is present in a number of e-cigarettes, however it is often not listed on the label as per a recent CDC study.
The consumption of nicotine in the developing adolescent brains could harm the parts that control:
Learning
Mood
Attention
Control by impulse
Nicotine use affects how the synapses--connections between brain cells--are formed. Regular usage in adolescence can also increase the risk for becoming addicted to cigarettes and other drugs.
Other than nicotine vaping liquid, vaping and later vapors could also contain other harmful substances like:
Cancer-causing chemicals
Heavy metals such as the lead, nickel, and tin
Flavorings can include diacetyl as an ingredient linked to lung disease
Organic compounds that are volatile
Ultra-fine particles that may be inhaled deep into the lungs
Scientists are still investigating the impact from vaping, mainly around Vitamin E Acetate, an ingredient added to some vaping liquids that helps dilute. There were more than 2,500 people being hospitalized because of vaping injury in December 17 January, 2019. Vaping has also contributed to 54 deaths in 27 states as well as those in District of Columbia.
Who is Vaping?
According to the 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) data, 3.6 million children in middle and high school are using electronic cigarettes. Use, defined by at minimum once per day over the past 30 days, has increased to 78 percent, from 11.7 to 20.8 percent in 2018.
E-cigarette use is on the rise during middle school and in high school students has led to an increase in overall usage of tobacco by 38 percent among high school students and 29 percent for middle students in middle school.
E-cigarette usage isn't restricted to adolescents: nine percent of U.S. adults say they "regularly or occasionally" vape.

Electronic cigarettes can benefit smokers of adulthood who are not pregnant , if used as a complete substitute for regular cigarettes and other smoked tobacco products.
They are not safe for teenagers, young adults pregnancy women and children, and adults who do not utilize tobacco products.
E-cigarettes can be used to benefit certain people while they cause harm to others, researchers are learning about whether e-cigarettes work for quitting smoking.
If you've not ever had other tobacco products before or electronic cigarettes, you shouldn't begin.
