Vaping Facts You Need to Know
You might be tempted to switch to electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes, vape pen, and other disposable or disposable devices for vaping) as a way to simplify the transition from traditional cigarettes to quitting smoking altogether. But is smoking electronic cigarettes (also known as vaping) better for you than smoking tobacco? Are they able to help you quit smoking for all? Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease, shares health information about smoking e-cigarettes.

1: Vaping is less harmful than smokingcigarettes, but it's not entirely safe.

E-cigarettes can heat nicotine (extracted from tobacco) flavorings, flavorings, and other chemicals to make an aerosol that you inhale. Regular tobacco cigarettes contain 7000 chemicals, most of which are harmful. While we're not sure the chemicals in e-cigarettes, Blaha says "There's almost no doubt that vaping exposes you to fewer toxic chemicals than smoking traditional cigarettes."

However, there has been an increase in lung injuries and death that is associated with vaping. In February 2020 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified 28007 cases related to e-cigarettes as well as vaping use-associated respiratory injury (EVALI) and at least 68 deaths related to this disease.

"These cases seem to touch those who alter their devices for vaping or who use illegally modified e-liquids. This is especially the case with vaping products containing THC," explains Blaha.

The CDC has identified vitamin E Acetate as a chemical of concern among people with EVALI. Vitamin E Acetate is a thinning agent commonly used in THC vape products. it was detected in all samples of lung fluid of patients suffering from EVALI analyzed by CDC.

The CDC recommends that people:

Do not consume e-cigarettes which contain THC also known as vaping.

Don't use sources you don't know, like family members, friends or online merchants to purchase the vaping device.

Do not alter or add substances into a device that is not the intention of the manufacturer.

Research from The Johns Hopkins University on vape ingredients published in October 2021 reveals thousands of chemical ingredients in vape and other products some of which aren't known yet. The team was able to identify were several potentially harmful ingredients, including caffeine. three chemicals not previously seen in electronic cigarettes in the past, pesticides, and two flavorings suspected of having irritating respiratory effects and toxic effects.

2. Research suggests vaping is harmful to your lungs and heart.

Nicotine is one of the major ingredients in regular tobacco and ecigarettes, and it's highly addictive. It triggers cravings for a smoke and suffer withdrawal symptoms should you not acknowledge the craving. Nicotine can be a dangerous substance. It raises blood pressure and elevates your adrenaline levels. This increases your heart rate and the risk of having a heart attack.

Is vaping harmful for you? There's lots of mystery about vaping. This includes the substances that make up the vapour and how they affect your physical overall health in the long run. "People need to understand that e-cigarettes are potentially dangerous to your health," claims Blaha. "Emerging data suggests links to lung diseases and chronic asthma, and links between dual use of electronic cigarettes and smoking cigarettes with cardiovascular disease. You're exposed to various chemicals that we don't yet understand and are therefore probably not completely safe."

Electronic cigarettes are similar to traditional cigarettes.

Both cigarettes, e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes contain nicotine. Some studies suggest it that they could be as addictive as cocaine and heroin. What's worse, says Blaha that many users of electronic cigarettes have more nicotine than they would from a combustible tobacco product. Users are able to purchase extra-strong cartridges that offer a higher level of nicotine, or raise the voltage of the e-cigarette, resulting in more of the substance.

Electronic cigarettes aren't the greatest smoking cessation tool.

Although they've been promoted as a way to aid you quit smoking, e-cigarettes haven't received Food and Drug Administration approval as smoking cessation devices. A recent study showed that the majority who had planned to use e-cigarettes to kick the habit of smoking nicotine ended up continuing to use traditional and e-cigarettes.

With regard to the EVALI outbreak, the CDC suggests that people using electronic cigarettes for smoking cessation, to be aware of the risks and benefits and to first think about using other alternatives to smoking cessation that have been approved by FDA.

5: A new generation is getting addicted to nicotine.

In the eyes of young people, electronic cigarettes, especially the disposable kind become more popular in comparison to any smoking product that is traditionally used. In the report 2021 National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than 2 million U.S. middle and high school students reported using electronic cigarettes in 2021, with more than 8 out of 10 teenagers using flavor-infused e-cigarettes.

According to Blaha there are three motives why electronic cigarettes are especially appealing to teens. Many teens believe that vaping is less harmful than smoking. A second benefit is that e cigarettes have a lower cost per usage than traditional cigarettes. Finally, youths and adults appreciate the absence of smoke attractive. Since they don't smell, e-cigarettes reduce some of the stigmas associated with smoking cigarettes.

"What I find most concerning about the rise of vaping is that people who would've never smoked otherwise, especially youth, are taking up the habit," Blaha said. Blaha. "It's one thing to transition from smoking cigarettes vaping. It's quite another thing to take the first steps to start nicotine use by vaping. Then, the addiction to nicotine is often the reason for using traditional tobacco products down the road."

Research from the CDC confirms that vaping among adolescents has dropped somewhat since 2020. Children who are left at home under their parents' supervision as they battle COVID-19 could have a role in that.

People in their teens change their tastes often and, when being surveyed, they may not consider having disposable products such "puff bars" as vaping. The same CDC report says disposable e-cigarette use has grown by 1,000 percent among high schoolers and 400 percent among middle schoolers in the year 2019.

Vaping and the COVID-19 Pandemic

When the coronavirus-related pandemic started, Blaha says, statistics show that the sales of electronic cigarettes dropped probably due to people staying at home at night and avoiding stores and public areas.

But Blaha sees a trend that causes him concern: the growing rate in daily use of e-cigarettes by everyone vape people. "The amount of people in the world who vape every day used to be 1 in five, but in recent times it's rising quite a bit which is worrying as it could mean more addiction to nicotine. I'm keeping a close monitor on this."

What Is Vaping? Everything You Need To Know

How Does Vape Work?

Vaping apparatuses vary in shape, size , and colour. They create an aerosol from heating up a liquid, that is often made up of flavors and other substances that makes vaping less savage (initially at the very least) unlike smoking. The liquid is able to deliver nicotine, marijuana, or another drug to the user through the mouthpiece. It is inhaled into the lungs . Then, it is eliminated through the mouth or nose.

Vaping Health and Safety Risks

However, these products typically come with a liquid containing around one-third of the nicotine that is found in cigarettes, for instance, one JUULpod with 5% strength was designed to substitute for an entire pack of cigarettes with nicotine strength, vaping users are still faced with many health and safety risks.

Nicotine, a stimulant which could harm the developing adolescent brain (which grows until around 25 years old age), is found in a number of e-cigarettes, however it is usually not on the packaging according to a recently published CDC study.

The consumption of nicotine in the developing adolescent brains can damage the areas which control:

Learning

Mood

Attention

Impulse control

Nicotine use affects how the synapses--connections between brain cells--are formed. Continuous use during adolescence might increase the likelihood of the development of addiction to cigarettes and other drugs.

Other than nicotine Vaping liquid and vaping vapor could also contain harmful substances including:

Cancer-causing chemicals

Heavy metals such as lead, tin, nickel

Flavorings that include diacetyl are one chemical that is associated with lung disease

Organic compounds with volatile compounds

Ultra-fine particles can be inhaled deeply into the lungs

Scientists are still studying the impacts of vaping, particularly around Vitamin E Acetate, which is one of the chemicals that are added to many vape liquids to help dilute. There were more then 2,500 patients receiving treatment for vaping related injuries as of 17 December, 2019. Vaping has also led to 54 deaths in 27 states and The District of Columbia.

Who is Vaping?

According to 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) data, 3.6 million children in middle and high school use e-cigarettes. Use, defined by at least once a day for the last 30 days, has increased by at 78 percent between 11.7 to 20.8 percent in 2018.

E-cigarette use is on the rise within middle and high school students has led to an increase in cigarettes used by 38 per cent among high school students and 29 percent among middle high schoolers.

E-cigarette use isn't limited to adolescents. Nine percent of U.S. adults say they "regularly or occasionally" vape.

Electronic cigarettes can help adult smokers who are non-pregnant if they are utilized as an alternative to regular cigarettes and other smoked tobacco products.

Electronic cigarettes are not recommended for adolescents, young adults, along with pregnant females, or people who don't currently use tobacco products.

Although e-cigarettes may be able to help some people but make others sick, scientists have a lot of information to gather about whether they are effective in helping people quit smoking.

If you've never utilized other tobacco products, or electronic cigarettes, then don't try it.

Additional research will help to understand long-term health effects.
