Are you planning a trip away from home? Don't forget to bring digital media in case WiFi goes down
Let me tell you about an excursion I made last year on a boat through the Arctic. It sounded amazing, National Geographic journey thru the ice and back with polar bears, and many other creatures. There was going to be ice everywhere, snow everywhere. Man-made machines were designed to combat the elements and to navigate the frozen wilderness of northern Norway. It was breathtaking, as if an epic battle against the weather, north and the pole.

I was told to pack as much technology as I could into my luggage. I did bring my laptop and added an extra large display screen to expand the workspace. They assured me that electricity was not a problem. youtube online converter What was to become the first test was a little bit unknown to me.. I didn’t know that only two days into the 14-day journey, my Internet connection would stop and I would lose internet for 10 consecutive days. I was shocked when it was over. No trip, regardless of how far away or difficult will result in the loss of connection from technology. In addition, I've got unfinished business to deal with in the coming week, but I didn't adequately prepare myself for the time off.

It doesn't matter if you need to leave your home. Internet is all around even in the case that your home network is having issues, there are many nearby McDonalds that offer free WiFi access. You can even bring your laptop to Starbucks and set up a table at the counter and surf the Internet until you're done. No cafe or restaurant can aid you from north. It's a long way to the closest generator that produces electricity. There is no internet access available. There are two options: either choose to go offline, or opt for satellite connections.


I cannot afford a sat phone, it is too expensive, especially to use it for Internet access. Next time, I'll have a large audio and video collection before I venture out into the world of unknown. Last time I had two songs. They were both downloaded earlier in the day. I was unable to enjoy three melodic jazz tracks, and one well-known song. That's all. 4 songs in 2 weeks of nothingness. If I knew this was likely to be the case, I would have prepared. I would have loaded my laptop with movies, TV shows, as well as music videos. My favorite podcasts would be my soundtrack for life. It's simple to download them and convert to mp3 for saving on my laptop. After that, I could just sit in my bedroom and listen to all the things I enjoy at home, but not have the time. This was my golden hour. Two weeks of gold. It turned out to have been 2 weeks filled with staring at ceilings, and running away from passengers to catch them each when they made a noise.

The trip was completely empty, both literally and figuratively.. I've never been this bored. The ice was thick. In the knowledge that it might cause issues The boat was forced to tow back to the shores of civilization. This was not a surprise however, again, hours and hours of downtime could have been spent listening to podcasts, watching DIY videos on fixing home problems and listening to music. The next time I'll convert YouTube videos into MP4 or mp3 formats using a laptop. This way, I can take my favourite tunes with me and listen to them from my laptop. Music can boost your spirits and give you a boost of energy. Keep in mind that Netflix and Hulu apps let you download movies and shows on your computer to watch offline. They can also be carried when you travel long distances to the Arctic. Be sure to not waste your time with boredom. Have fun!
