The legend of Danau Tondana comes from North Sulawesi. And the story begins.
In ancient times in the area Tondano, North Sulawesi, there standed towering mountains. It consist of two regions, the north and the south. Every region was led by leader called Tonaas.
In the north religion, Tonaas had a daughter named Marimabau. He dispointed because Marimabau couldn’t inherit his throne.
In the south region, Tonaas had a son named Maharimbau. He taught his son to be a knight and could inherit his throne.
North Tonaas : “Listen my daughter, this region need a heir of my throne but because you’re a girl. You cant inherit my throne.”
Marimabau : “Pardon me father, what should i do of I want to be your next heir?”
North Tonaas : “I’m sorry, but I have to train you to became a knight that could command and keep this region safe, and I want you to make yourself similiar with a true knight look to prevent conflict in our nation.”
Marimabau : “Oh father. Do you really want to treat your only daughter like a boy?”
North Tonaas : “I can’t find another way. You have to know that our region really need a young knight and leader.”
Marimabau : “I accept your command just because you’re my father.”
North Tonaas : “ Thank you for your sacrifice my daughter. Then i have one more command for you.”
Marimabau : “ what is that father?”
North Tonaas : “ You must not get married until i passed away because it becomes our rule.”
Marimabau : “ Yes, i know father. I’ll do your command perfectly. I promise you.”
North Tonaas : “ That is the best commitment my daughter. And promise me, if you break your promise something dangerous will occur.”
Marimabau : “Yes father, don’t worry about it. I’ll keep my promise.”
Meanwhile, in south region, Tonaas taught his son became a strong knight.
South Tonaas : “ Listen my son, you are getting growth and growth. And now, you are young man. So, i want you to be a strong knight and a leader for our nation.”
Maharimbau : “Sure father, I’ll do anything to make you proud.”
South Tonaas : “Thank you for your hard willing, I appreciate that, and I have more command for you.”
Maharimbau : “What is that, father?”
South Tonaas : “You have to promise me that you must not get married until I pass away, if you break your promise, something dangerous will occur.”
Maharimbau : “No problem. Take it easy. Trust me. I promise.”
One day Maharimbau went to forest to hunt a deer. At the same time, Marimabau went to forest foe practice her ability riding horse. Hearing some noise makes Maharimbau curious where the noise come from. Then, he was looking for the source of the noise.
Maharimbau : “Who’s there? You make my deer run away because you make some noise.”
Marimabau : “ Hey, are you not looking around? This is forest. Everybody can do everything here.”
Maharimbau : “But you’re disturbing me!”
Marimabau : “I’m sorry, i don’t expect to disturb you. Who are you?”
Maharimbau : “Why is it so important for you?”
Marimabau : “I’m just asking if you don’t wanna answer its okay.”
Maharimbau : “You’re so recentful.” (Pulling a sword and put it on her neck)
Marimabau : “Oh! So do you want to fight?”
Maharimbau : “Yes, of course. If you want to fight i’m ready to defeat you.”
Marimabau : “But sorry I don’t have enough time to play with you. There’s something more important than this.”
Maharimbau : “Why you say like that? Are you afraid?”
Marimabau : “Definitly not. Are you sure for asking me to fight? Okay I accept your challenge, but not now.”
Maharimbau : “Okay, I hope you’ll come tomorrow evening.”
Marimabau : “We’ll see who’s the winner.”

Maharimbau and Marimabau come back to their region. They preparing for their fight tomorrow. They practiced riding horse, sharpened their sword, and improved their archery technique ability.
And the time had come. They had already set with a position and their swords. They fought each other. They had same skills, so no one of them won that fight. Suddenly, Maharimabau pointed his sword to Marimabau’s hat and put it down from her head. He very shocked after he saw Marimabau’s hair was loose beautifully. He didn’t expect that Marimabau was a beautiful girl. At a moment, he fell in love with her.
Maharimbau : “Oh my God!! Are you a girl?”
Marimabau : “Hmmm eee...” (with panic face)
Maharimbau : “Calm down. Why you look so worry? Is it something that nobody know?”
Marimabau : “As you see. I’m a girl from north region. My look is similar with a man because my father wat me to be a true knight fighter who can safe our region.”
Maharimbau : “Why does your father want you similar like a man? Instead, you’re beautiful.”
Marimabau : “My father doesn’t has a son to inherit his throne. I’m the only one generation. So, he teached me like a man.”
Maharimbau : “Is it because of our region conflict for years?”
Marimabau : “ I think it’s true. So, what do you think? You want to make north and south region unite?”
Maharimbau : “I think so. I’m tired of this conflict. For many years, we never solve this conflict. What should we do to make this over?
Marimabau : “Why don’t we persuade Tonaas to make peace and to unite our region?”
Maharimbau : “That is good idea. After this, we have to try creating peace between north and south region.”
Both of them tried to persuade Tonaas so that region can unite. They had kind purpose to make their region peace and prosperous.
One day. They met again in the same place where they fighted. They told progress of persuading Tonaan to make region unity, but no one of them gave a good news. Tonaas didn’t want to unite because Tonaas was getting afraid that theur region, power, troops, and wealth could be seized by one of them.
Maharimbau : “My father didn’t want to hear me. He’s still on his ideology. He didn’t want unite his region.”
Marimabau : “So do i. My father still on his ideology too. What should we do?”
Maharimabau : “How about if we are going to unite first?”
Marimabau : “What do you mean? I don’t understand.”
Maharimbau : “I’ll marry you. Will you marry me? Honestly I’m falling in love with you when we first met.”
Marimabau : “Hmm. Honestly, I have the same felling with you.”
Maharimbau : “Really? So, would you be mine?”
Marimabau : “Yes, I would.”
Long after that proposal, they were getting merried without their Tonaas knowing. They forgot their promise to their Tonaas. Suddenly, the sky became dark, the light swopt down, and the wind blowed so hard. From far they saw a huge wave closed region so fast. Finally, water filled up the valley betwen north and south region. From that time, water can not withdraw until now. Now that region knew as Danau Tondano.
