You need to understand what a down means in order to play football. Downs are the four attempts that the team with the ball gets. These downs are used by the team to advance the ball 10 yard. If the offense gains 10 yards, they get another set of downs. If they fail 10 yards after four plays, the opposition team gets the ball.
