Betting Strategies in online poker tournaments are basically ways of either winning the pot cheaply when you don't have anything or betting the right amount to deny proper odds for a draw but to allow a call from someone with a hand not as good as yours.

One note of caution however. If and when people do call your "opener" raise you can put them on a long suit hand. Or at least you'll know ipso facto they are an aggressive player and you need to proceed with caution.

If you're at a group of inexperienced no limit Texas hold em players, you can usually stack quite a few chips by picking out the player who acts as if he has a big hand, and bets over the top of everyone else. More often than not, this fish has absolutely nothing and is trying his best to buy a pot. Usually online you will see more hands then in a live game therefore it is not uncommon for the blinds structure to be shorter. For example live poker tournaments will range from 15 minutes to 60 minutes blinds. When the blinds increase slowly the structure will be more geared towards skill. The shorter the blinds the more luck will be needed or you will need to be more aggressive sooner to keep from being blinded out.

I once read an article that showed that a person could make nearly $25.00 an hour playing in a $150.00 buy-in, $1/$2 blinds, no-limit ring game by going All In with only the top four hands. The rationale was that you would double up once every two to three hours and this would make up for any hands where the top four hands were beat. It takes six to eight hours a day, over an extended period of time, to realize these profits, but it appears possible.

For low entry fee online tournament players I saw this book as a glimmer of hope in that someone may have put forth some thought in to how to actually win tournaments consistently at that level. It seemed to me though that playing "small ball" poker with clusters of players who have little regard for position and the real value of hole cards might be an interesting experience, but not profitable.

To encourage him to keep playing in this manner, you may actually want to go the full hog and congratulate him on the way that he played the hand (with your tongue firmly in your cheek of course!) and tell him that you had no idea he was holding such a monster.
