Vaping Facts You Need to Know
There are many reasons to use vaping with electronic devices (e-cigarettes, vape pens, as well as other non-disposable but disposable vaping gadgets) as a method to reduce the time it takes to switch from traditional cigarettes to smoking no cigarettes at all. But is smoking e cigarettes (also called vaping) healthier than using tobacco products? Can e-cigarettes help you to stop smoking once and for all? Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease and shares information about health benefits of vaping.

1 Vaping is not as harmful that smoking cigarettes. However, it's not completely safe.

E-cigarettes can heat nicotine (extracted from tobacco) flavourings, flavorings and chemicals to form an aerosol that you inhale. Regular tobacco cigarettes contain 7000 chemicals, some of which are harmful. While we don't know exactly the chemical composition of e-cigarettes, Blaha says "There's almost no doubt that vaping exposes you to fewer toxic chemicals than smoking traditional cigarettes."

However, there have been reports of lung-related injuries and deaths with vaping. In February of 2020, experts from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed 28007 cases of ecigarettes and vaping use-associated damage to the lung (EVALI) and there were 68 deaths linked to that disease.

"These cases appear to predominantly be affecting people who alter their devices for vaping or who use vape liquids from the black market that are modified. This is especially the case for vaping products that contain THC," explains Blaha.

The CDC has identified vitamin E is acetate as a chemical of concern in people suffering from EVALI. Vitamin E acetate is a substance that thickens the vapor employed in THC vape products. it was identified in all samples of lung fluid of patients suffering from EVALI analyzed through the CDC.

The CDC advises people to:

Don't smoke THC-containing e cigarette also known as vaping.

Do not use informal sources such as relatives, friends or online retailers to buy smoking devices.

Do not modify or add substances to a device to use vapes that is not the intention of the manufacturer.

The research conducted by The Johns Hopkins University on vape ingredients published in the month of October 2021 shows thousands of chemical ingredients that are present in vape and other products, most of which are not yet identified. Some of the ones they could identify were several potentially harmful chemicals, including caffeine. three compounds previously unknown in electronic cigarettes including pesticides and two flavorings associated with negative effects on breathing and respiratory irritation.

2: Research suggests vaping is detrimental to your lungs and heart.

Nicotine is most commonly used in regular cigarettes and e cigarettes, and it is highly addictive. It induces craving for smoking and may trigger withdrawal symptoms should you not acknowledge the craving. Nicotine is considered to be a toxic substance. It raises blood pressure and increases your adrenaline levels, which can increase your heart rate as well as the probability of having a heart attack.

Can vaping be harmful to you? There are many unknowns about vaping. These include the chemicals that make up the vapor and how they affect your physical health over the long haul. "People need to understand that e-cigarettes are potentially dangerous to your health," Blaha says. Blaha. "Emerging research suggests connections to lung diseases that are chronic and asthma, and evidence linking dual use of electronic cigarettes and smoking cigarettes with cardiovascular disease. You're exposing yourself to all sorts of chemicals that we don't yet understand and that are probably not risk-free."

Electronic cigarettes can be just exactly as addicting and addictive as the traditional ones.

E-cigarettes, like regular cigarettes, contain nicotine, which research suggests can be as addictive heroin and cocaine. However, according Blaha and others, people who smoke e-cigarettes have more nicotine than they do from a combustion tobacco product: Users can purchase cartridges with extra strength, which have higher levels of nicotine, or boost the e-cigarette's power to get an even higher dose of the substance.

Electronic cigarettes aren't always the best way to quit.

Though they've been advertised as a tool to help people quit smoking cigarettes, e-cigarettes don't have Food and Drug Administration approval as a device to help you quit smoking. A recent study revealed many people who wanted to use e-cigarettes to kick the nicotine habit ended up continuing to use traditional or electronic cigarettes.

Due to EVALI outbreak In light of the EVALI outbreak, the CDC recommends those who are using electronic cigarettes for smoking cessation to assess the risks and advantages before deciding to use other FDA-approved smoking cessation options.

5: A new generation is hooked on nicotine.

For young people, e-cigarettes, particularly the disposable variety is more popular than standard tobacco product. A report from 2021 states that National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than 2 million U.S. middle and high school students reported using e-cigarettes in 2021. In addition, more than 8 in 10 of those teenagers using flavor-infused e-cigarettes.

According to Blaha, there are three motives why electronic cigarettes are especially appealing to teens. For one, many teens believe vaping isn't as harmful as smoking. E-cigarettes also have a lower price per-use than traditional cigarettes. In addition, both adults and youth appreciate the absence of smoke attractive. Since they don't smell, e-cigarettes alleviate some of the stigmas associated with smoking cigarettes.

"What I find most concerning about the rise of vaping is that people who would've never smoked otherwise, especially youth, are taking up the habit," Blaha claims. Blaha. "It's one thing if you transition from smoking cigarettes vaping. It's an entirely different thing to start your nicotine addiction with vaping. Being addicted to nicotine usually leads to using traditional tobacco products in the future."

Research conducted by the CDC indicates that the use of vapes among adolescents has dropped somewhat since 2020. Children being at home under the supervision of their parents during the COVID-19 pandemic could make a difference in this downward trend.

Young people change their preferences often and, when interviewed, may not have a thought of the use of disposable products, such as "puff bars" as vaping. The same CDC report says that disposable e-cigarette use has increased by 1000 percent among high school students and 400% among middle school students from the year 2019.

Vaping and the COVID-19 Pandemic

In the first year that the coronavirus virus pandemic began, Blaha states that data shows that sales of e-cigarettes dropped likely due to people spending more time at home and abstaining from stores and public spaces.

However, Blaha is aware of a trend that worries him: increasing rates that people use e-cigarettes daily among all vape people. "The percentage of people using vape every day was previously one in 5people, but lately it's up quite a bit, which is concerning because it indicates a greater dependence on nicotine. I'm keeping a close watching that."

What Is Vaping? Everything You Need To Know

How Does Vape Work?

Vaping equipment can differ in terms of shape, size and colors. Vaping devices release aerosols after heating a liquid that sometimes consists of flavors and other substances that make vaping seem less harsh (initially at the very least) that smoking. This liquid can deliver nicotine, marijuana, or any other drug to the user through a mouthpiece that is inhaled into the lungs , and then out through the mouth and nose.

Vaping Health and Safety Risks

The majority of these usually contain a liquid with up to one third of the nicotine content of a cigarette--for example, one JUULpod containing 5% strength is designed to substitute for an entire pack of cigarettes in nicotine strength. Vaping users nonetheless face multiple health and safety risks.

Nicotine, a stimulant which could cause harm to the growing adolescent brain (which will continue to grow up to about 25 years age) can be found in a number of e-cigarettes, however it is not always listed on the label according to a latest CDC study.

The consumption of nicotine during the development of adolescent brains may harm areas that regulate:

Learning

Mood

Attention

Controlling impulses

Nicotine use affects how the synapses--connections between brain cells--are formed. Adolescents who smoke regularly can also increase the risk of becoming addicted to cigarettes and other drugs.

In addition to nicotine vaping liquid, the vaping liquid and its subsequent inhalation could contain other dangerous components, such as

Cancer-causing chemicals

Metals that are heavy, like lead, nickel and tin

Flavorings such as diacetyl, a chemical linked to lung disease

Organic compounds that are volatile

Ultra-fine particles that are inhaled deeply into the lungs

Scientists are still actively discovering the consequences of vaping. This is especially the case with Vitamin E Acetate, which is which is a chemical that is added to certain vaping liquids to help dilute. There were morethan2,500 cases of users hospitalized due to vaping injuries on the 17th of November the 17th of December, 2019. Vaping has also led to 54 deaths in 27 states as well as also the District of Columbia.

Who is Vaping?

According to the 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) information, 3.6 million children in middle school and high school are using electronic cigarettes. Smoking, defined as at least one time per throughout the past 30 calendar days, has risen 78 percent from 11.7 to 20.8 percent in 2018.

The growth of e-cigarettes by middle and high school students has resulted in an increase in overall tobacco smoking by 38 percent for high schoolers and 29 percent for middle schoolers.

E-cigarette usage isn't restricted to teens: 9 percent of U.S. adults say they "regularly or occasionally" vape.
