Jack suffers from a disease called photosensitivity which is a disease that has the risk of getting burns when coming into contact with the sun, (an example of this is in page #1). Because of his photosensitivity, Jack must wear special sun lotion to shorten the risk of his burns that was made by his dad. Because he can’t spend much time in the sun he spends his spare time running on the roofs which he likes to call shadow jumping (page #8). While shadow jumping he meets someone named Beth, Who saved him from falling off a roof,(page #6). Beth wears black and white make-up and always carries a rucksack. While shadow jumping, Jack and Beth meet Kai who isn’t thrilled about our Jack and Beth being on his roof but they manage to keep their distance from him, later Jack gives Beth his address. Soon after Beth arrives Jack and Beth start to look for Jack’s dad who is a scientist to help to get Jack’s sun lotion to work better because it’s abilities are losing power and to help with his photosensitivity, so our protagonists head to auntie lil’s (Jack’s aunt) house the last to come into contact with his dad. The protagonists travel by bus to Auntie Lil’s house, while on the bus, the driver runs over something. So they get off the bus to see what it was, after Jack and Beth inspect it, it appears to be a dog named Rex with several burns and a number on the collar they couldn’t understand then they decide to walk. Beth ended up losing her rucksack so the 2 got it back. Then after breakfast they talk to Jack’s aunt but she only tells them where his dad used to work and that soon after he quit. The best way to get answers is to research, so Jack and Beth head to the library to find answers. They find out Tom (Jack’s dad) had worked at Bioscience Discoveries and possibly experimented on children with a man named Dr.Richard Blackstone. After leaving the library Jack thought he saw his neighbor. Then Jack and Beth headed to Bioscience Discoveries and tried to gather information but all they found out is that Blackstone had a secret lab. Later that night they checked to see if any place was available for entry and the two snuck in through a window to go to the secret lab. The protagonist found out there were rats with burns like Rex, and the guards found out there were intruders inside. Jack and Beth tried to escape. They almost did but the sun was rising and due to the photosensitivity Jack blacked out and awoke at the hospital with Beth. Blackstone found out about the two and Jack, still remembering what he read at the library, was slightly angered and frightened. But Blackstone told Jack that it was a rumor and it doesn’t take much for them to exist, also that he was just working on an anti-aging serum with his own money and lab. Then after Blackstone left, Beth remembered that stress can cause damage to you, turns out his photosensitivity was just that and his mom explained that, He would get to see his dad soon.
