Four Roles of Social Activism
Social activism is an ongoing, intentional act with the intention of actually bringing about social change in the world. Activists typically engage in acts of civil disobedience when it comes to advocating for social change or when it comes to engaging in social movements. Those who participate in protests or sit-ins may also be considered activists. This is because they are trying to bring about change through peaceful means. If freight class believe strongly about an issue and are committed to making a change, you may also be classified as an activist.

The best way to think of social activism is to consider it as a way of life. Activism comes in many forms. Some of these forms include Boycotts, marches, sit-ins, and boycotts. Boycotts are actions that companies take when they find that their product or services are being sold in foreign countries. Marching is captial of civil disobedience where people go out on a protest march to send a message. When businesses sell products to these countries, the boycott occurs.

There are other forms of social activism that occur when members of a group disagree on some facts or strategy. Divorce is a perfect example of this. Divorce can be very emotionally draining for those who participate in it. When two individuals disagree on any aspect of the divorce, such as custody, visitation rights, child support, and so forth, there are ways that these individuals can engage in peaceful protest.

Other examples of social activism include religious and political movements. Religious and political movements tend to be quite controversial. There are times when those who are participating in these demonstrations do not always agree with the message of the organizer. Sometimes these disagreements are a part of free speech, but sometimes they are fueled by anger. The more heated the situation gets, the harder it is for the participants to resolve their differences. In order to have these types of protests, there are certain tactics that need to be utilized.

First of all, it is important that organizers of social action take into account that they are not conducting an overt political agenda. It would be extremely tempting, especially if they are doing it with the intent to accomplish a political objective, to participate in activities that could get them publicity and make their voice heard. Unfortunately, this sort of activism only serves to distract from their true goals. They may also inadvertently alienate their potential new supporters by participating in social action that ends up alienating everyone. All of the activists involved in an event or movement need to have an honest and open dialogue about what they plan to accomplish.

Activists engaged in social activism should also remember that the people who are listening and supporting them are real people, with real feelings. They want to be treated with respect as individuals. They don't necessarily share all of the activist's goals and ideals. It is important to keep this in mind when communicating with these individuals. By treating all people with respect and affording them the courtesy of an honest and open dialogue about their ideas, the activists involved will find that their efforts will be more successful.

There are a number of different types of social activism. The most common types of activism include the following: peace movements, reproductive rights movements, gay and lesbian movements, environmental movements, and ethnic and religious movements. Although all four of these types of movements advocate for similar causes, they each have four specific roles to play in the overall success of their cause. All four of these activists need to demonstrate the characteristics listed above to be successful. If an organizer of a social movement does not understand these basic characteristics of his or her movement, he or she will quickly begin to see results are few and far between.

Activists engaged in social change must not forget that their primary goal is to change the social system. This means that they must be prepared to work within the existing structures of power in order to achieve their goals. Activists must also be prepared to engage in direct action if doing so results in them changing systems or laws. Finally, activists need to understand that achieving social change will require sustained social effort. In order to truly make a difference, activists must continue to learn the basics of social activism and be willing to implement the lessons learned along the way.
