La masse se conserve lors d’une réaction chimique. En effet, une réaction chimique est uniquement une réorganisation des atomes mis en jeu (comme si on cassait une maison en LEGO pour en faire une autre différente). Des molécules se cassent pour en former des différentes. Il n’y a jamais création ou perte d’atomes pendant le processus.
Pour représenter cela, on utilise des chiffres placés devant la formule chimique des molécules. Ces chiffres s’appellent des nombres stœchiométriques. Ils multiplient la molécule entière. Par exemple, l’équation “ 2 H2O2 → 2 H2O + O2 “ se lit “2 molécules de H2O2 réagissent pour donner 2 molécules de H2O et 1 molécule de O2”.
Finalement, comme chaque type d’atome a une masse propre, si les atomes se conservent, alors la masse se conserve aussi pendant la réaction chimique. Ce principe a été démontré par un chimiste français, Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier, au XVIIIème siècle.
