Don Toliver is the latest artist to have a song blow up thanks to TikTok. The track in question, “No Idea,” had its initial release way back in May of 2019. Over 6 months later, it’s become a viral trend on TikTok. The amount of plays gained from the social platform has catapulted “No Idea” into the Billboard Hot 100 (#68), Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs (#28), and Hot Rap Songs charts (#20).
TikTok has arguably been one of the biggest forces in popular music since its 2017 arrival. It was TikTok that, last December, brought life to Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” which would go on to break the record for most consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. A Houston-native, Toliver (real name Caleb Zackery Toliver) has been in the game for the last three years, dropping his first mixtape, Playa Familia, in May of 2017.
2018 was notable, though.
On August 2nd, his second mixtape, Donny Womack released.
On August 3rd, fellow-Houstonian Travis Scott’s long-awaited Astroworld debuted, with Toliver featured on the track “Can’t Stay,” gaining Toliver international attention.
Then on August 4th, Scott publicly announced Toliver as the latest signee to Scott’s Cactus Jack Records.
