The Secret Life Of Olive Oil
An annual international symposium about olive oil and health hosted by the Yale School of Public Health will be heading to the middle of the world of olive oil - Spain - where leading experts will meet in the coming months to study the potential and impact of what is sometimes referred to as "liquid gold."

It is hosted by Jaen University. University of Jaen, the symposium will take place between December 9 and 12 in Jaen, a city in the state of Andalusia which is the center of Spain's olive oil belt, and an area under consideration as a UNESCO World Heritage site for an olive grove, known as"the Mar de Olivos, or "Sea of Olives." This is the third international symposium held since 2018. The last time the event was cancelled because of the pandemic.

The event was organized by Vasilis Vasiliou, Ph.D. The Susan Dwight Bliss Professor of Epidemiology and Chair of the Yale School of Public Health's Department of Environmental Health Sciences as well as Tassos C. Kyriakides, Ph.D., a Yale Center for Analytical Sciences (biostatistics) faculty member. The symposium will bring together academics, business leaders farmers, regional and national policymakers to discuss the still-untapped opportunities of the Olive tree as well as its fruits, in particular olive oil.

"We're thrilled to return. This year's event will be the biggest yet, with an amazing and exciting program. I am extremely thrilled to bring all the people who are as obsessed with olive oil as I am," Vasiliou said. Vasiliou. "There's no other gathering anywhere else on the planet."

The symposium of this year will cover diverse topics that are central to the cultivation of olives as well as the future of olive oil both in human and planetary health. They will include:

Recent studies have revealed improvements in health related to olive oil.
What is the impact of climate change on olive groves and how the cultivation of olives can positively affect the climate.
Successful olive oil marketing and business models.
Every program session will close by a discussion round table followed by the opportunity to ask questions. The symposium will also feature the opportunity to taste olive oil and a guided tour of olive groves.

The Yale School of Public Health is planning to establish the Yale Institute for Olive Sciences and Health that will be dedicated to the study of the olive tree, its products , and their derivatives, and ways to further integrate the fruit and its components in the nutrition of individuals. The institute would also focus on planetary health issues, including circular economy models, sustainability and climate change.

Vasiliou, who is from Greece as well as an important center for olive oil production and a leading consumer, said that a proposal for the establishment of an institute for olive oil needs to be completed and reviewed by the at the end of the year. The institute could serve as a global body that would facilitate and oversee activities in all aspects related to the olive tree and its products.

There's no other symposium in the world

Vasilis Vasiliou
"I have a family that was raised on olive oil and have experienced its benefits firsthand. Mediterranean nutrition has been recognized over the years as being among the most healthy in the world, and its cornerstone is olive oil." said the doctor. "I would like to contribute to establishing Yale's School of Public Health's collaborative leadership in this important field."

In the meantime, Kyriakides, an olive oil sommelier, not only always tastes oils from all over the world, he consumes a lot of olive oil each day to cook, as well as his morning Extra virgin olive oil shots.

"It is a good choice for me, and it is absolutely delicious and healthfully nutritious," he said. "The Olive oil and the olive tree have connected people for thousands of years. it is our responsibility as health professionals in the public sector to ensure the benefits that this superfood can effect on the human body are passed on to those we interact with."

The research of the past 50 years strongly suggests that olive oil promotes health and well-being, Kyriakides said. A daily intake of 20 grams of olive oil (about two tablespoons) which contains a specific amount of a certain polyphenol (at minimum five mg of hydroxytyrosol as well as its derivatives) is a health claim, approved by the European Food Safety Agency and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration which pertains to protecting blood lipids from oxidative stress.

Spain has asked to host the co-host of this year's symposium, is the leading producer of olive oil around the globe and accounts for 35% - 40% of its output, Kyriakides said. Furthermore, many of the innovations in the olive agricultural and sustainability and planetary health initiatives have come out of Spanish practices.

"Now more than ever before, the need for such an international-focused institute is apparent in our efforts to develop more sustainable practices that will help both the planet and human well-being," Kyriakides said.

However, the primary fat acid found present in olive oil is the monounsaturated fat called Oleic acid, which accounts for 73 percent of the oil content.

Research suggests that oleic acid can reduce inflammation and may even have beneficial effects on genes linked to cancer ( 2Trusted Source, 3Trusted Source, 4Trusted Source, 5Trusted Source).

Monounsaturated fats are resistant to heat which makes extra virgin olive oil an nutritious choice for cooking.
