A glue trap seals weeks of searching for a venomous zebra cobra in north Raleigh.
Despite the efforts of animal control officers and law enforcement, a glue trap snared a venomous zebra cobra on a north Raleigh porch Wednesday night, ending an eventful 48-hour period that attracted attention throughout North Carolina.

Cobras in red buckets are guided into a safe location so the glue on their bodies can be removed.

At youtube.com, a striped snake crawled out of the siding of a house on Sandringham Drive onto the front porch of a home earlier in the day. Lifting its head, its hood could be seen.

Camera crews had to be redirected after Animal Control officers confirmed it was a snake before moving in to try to capture it.

The search was sparked by a 911 call from the same home early Tuesday.

Neighbor Joan Nelson said the ordeal was over.

She says she feels safe and happy now. Getting outside on my deck or stepping out on my deck gives me a sense of freedom. Even so, I feel kind of sorry for the snake.

A zebra cobra has been missing from a north Raleigh neighborhood where this stunted snake is seen.

Snakes can spit up to nine feet and are faster than most snakes. A morning dog walk turns into a dangerous event when the snake spits this wide. The African Snakebite Institute states that the snake is very dangerous. It is possible that the venom can damage a victim's nervous system.

Anyone who has been poisoned by the cobra will feel pain, swelling, irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea. It would then lead to a high fever and breathing problems, which could cause respiratory failure.

The Avian and Exotic Animal Care is run by veterinarian Salina Locke, who treats all types of pets.

The cobra in this species usually does not bite. The venom from them, she said, is typically sprayed. She said they are extremely accurate and shoot straight for the eyes.

Despite the risks involved, Locke doesn't recommend buying this snake for a pet.

Most bites occur while people are sleeping. A study shows that those who are bitten may suffer long-term health issues.

It was Tuesday afternoon when police conducted a search of 6917 Chamonix Place, near the street where the snake was last seen.

Four officers were dispatched to that home for an animal issue in March. They returned Monday and Tuesday after seeing the zebra cobra on a porch about a half mile away.

At that address, Keith and Rebecca Gifford inhabit the house, according to county records. On a Facebook page associated with Keith Gifford's name, he posts photos of snakes owned by his son, Christopher.

Chris Gifford has more than 460000 followers on TikTok. He claims to have a zebra cobra seven feet long on one of his posts.
