The European News Initiative
The Digital News Initiative is a European organization established by Google to support high quality journalism through innovation and technology. It encompasses an Innovation Fund worth up to six million Euros, which in next year issued grants to 461 different projects in 28 European countries. However, as I understand it, the initiative is aimed mainly at offering a platform for two companies - one from the Netherlands and one from Finland - to publish completely independent news sites covering topics they are familiar with. If you are a news publisher, you should think about joining this initiative, as it can benefit your business model considerably. Here are some reasons why:

The Digital News Initiative has an in-house Innovation Lab. This works closely with leading Dutch and Finnish newsrooms to incubate new innovations. As part of the initiative, the organizations carry out extensive research on topics like digital news formats, online journalism and consumer behavior. These will then be used to develop new content and deliver better user experience. In late 2018, the Innovation Lab will expand to include additional areas in response to the increasing demand from publishers.

Many publishers are using the innovation fund to build a stronger platform for their brands.
