When a gas is heated, the particles gain more kinetic energy, they move further away, so overall the gas expand. Not the tiny particles.
When it cools, it has lesser kinetic energy, they slow down and move closer together. The gas particles contracts.

Contracting is when you reduce kinetic energy.
Compression is when you change the density of the gas

When we take away heat from it, its contraction.
In Gas, there is space between particles, so we push it by force. Can compress and expand.
In Liquid, We cannot compress or very difficult to do. Cannot pull it back either.
The liquid expand, but the particles does not expand, it just moving further apart.
In solids, the particles are NOT free to move around; ...
In the atomic level, the particles are moving, but are not free to move around, but are vibrating in place.
When we heat the metal up, it increases vibration.
