The Razer Kraken Tournament Edition headset: (almost) justifiable mess – a review

The Razer Kraken Tournament Edition is a gaming headset with an interesting proposition: to offer 360-degree sound and increase the player’s immersion, allowing him to identify which side each sound is coming from. It’s fairly solid and comfortable, and at least for the Glorious PC Gamer Master Race is a product that makes sense.

After all, is the chic Razer headset worth what they ask for? I tried for a month and let me tell you what I found in the next few paragraphs.

design
Visually, the Kraken Tournament Edition is eye-catching. The model sent to me came in the company’s signature green color, but there is a completely black version for those who want more discretion. Placing it on the head, attention is paid to care with comfort in shells, which use a very soft and pleasant gel foam. The size of the headphones, which are more than 50 mm in diameter, is also helpful.

The use of the gel serves to reduce heat as the ears are completely covered; the lining uses leatherette and fabric seams and the end result is really very good.

By adjusting the headband and positioning the headphones, I felt a sense of comfort that I rarely had, and that does not tire me after prolonged use.

The arch and inner frame are metal, but the former is fully padded for maximum comfort. Since it is a gaming product, it needs to take these details into account considering that its users will spend hours playing games. Hence the name “Tournament Edition” because it is a product that meets the needs of professional players, but also pleases those who only enjoy the holy LoLzinho at weekends.

The microphone is flexible and retractable so you can position it however you like, or retract it completely inside the headset body when not in use. It even makes transport and storage easier, which should be more present in headsets for non-gamer audiences.

Seeing that the Razer Kraken Tournament Edition is an excellent choice, but there are some downsides that need to be discussed.

Performance
Without gilding the pill, this headset only makes sense for PC gamers. This is because a certified THX module (an audio company created by George Lucas to ensure sound quality in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, sold to Creative in 2002 and purchased by Razer in 2016) depends on proprietary Razer software Synapse to configure 360º Surround Sound.

By connecting the headset to the module and the headset to the computer, you can configure the headset driver settings to better respond to what is happening in games. This is a somewhat time-consuming process, more complicated than it should be, but essential for those looking for maximum audio performance.

Note that the THX Spatial Audio feature is not surround sound in itself, but a software emulation. Of course, when you shoot online, the feeling will be almost the same, but it’s always good to warn paratroopers.

The module has a number of controls, from volume control to bass control, a switch to turn the sound on and off 360º, and a switch to change the operating mode between games and calls. So, while it’s quite expensive (and not even perfect hardware), it can be an alternative tool for recording audio over the Internet, such as podcasts. When it comes to live streaming with commentary, the Kraken Tournament Edition has a lot.

You will need to calibrate the drivers many times, from game to game, to accurately reproduce the sound and determine the direction the sounds are coming from. Of course, since it’s an emulation, the result is not perfect, it was easy to confuse shots in games like Battlefield 1, and some bugs were identified in Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, a title fully compatible with binaural audio.

Without the Kraken Tournament Edition module, it becomes an ordinary headset. I also tested it on a PS4 and noticed that the audio was a bit muffled at times and the microphone response sound was quieter than the standard one. On the other hand, when I plugged it into my cell phone to listen to music, I saw better bass reproduction which is very good and can please heavy metal lovers. Of course, no one will buy this kit just for this purpose, but it turns out to be an option.

Finally, the soundproofing is not complete, you can still hear sounds from outside, but I do not consider this a major drawback; It drastically reduces the volume of the outside world, but it’s always nice to hear the sounds of what is happening around you.

Application
The Razer Kraken Tournament Edition is different, although it is not intended for all players. Console lovers will not notice any benefit when purchasing this headset, and there are even better Razer options on the market for these consumers.

For PC gamers, both professional and casual, it becomes a more enjoyable gadget as long as the user is aware that it will have a lot of work to configure it satisfactorily.

The Razer Kraken Tournament Edition launched in Brazil at the end of 2018 with an MSRP of 799 BRL, but today it can be found in the retail chain at prices ranging from 650 BRL to 699 BRL. It’s not an encouraging value, especially considering its limitations outside of the PC, where it becomes an absolutely common headset, but it’s worth a try the first time.

If you own a PC player and want to enjoy games with 360-degree sound and want to get your hands dirty to play on the go, the Razer Kraken Tournament Edition is an interesting option. For everyone else, it’s better to consider other cheaper and less restrictive options.
