Mega Man 11 – review

Mega Man is one of the oldest game series and has a huge number of titles, divided into eight different series. Even though he was adored by fans, Capcom neglected the series for many years.

When the developer released something new, it was either poorly made mobile games or third-party fan game ports without having to move your finger.




Therefore, when Keiji Inafune, the creator of the little blue robot, announced a spiritual successor called Mighty No. 9, fans cheered and funded the project in record time. In short, the delivered product was much less than expected and I won’t even mention the problems along the way.

Capcom has a controversial policy regarding the continuation and renewal of old series: if the test title does not sell more than two million copies, the series returns to the drawer. This is what happened to Darkstalkers, even though the compilation was very poorly done.

The two Mega Man Legacy Collection compilations were different, so they gave the go-ahead for Mega Man 11. It’s boring, but that’s how capitalism works.

Games aside, Mega Man 11 is a very well made game. The plot is based on the basic formula of the classic series, but this time Dr. Wily opens old wounds: an evil scientist resumed research rejected by the academy after Dr. Light objected to them as too dangerous (basically his fault, it’s time).

Now the improved Double Gear system allows the robot to use high power or achieve high speeds, but at a very high cost for its systems.




As always, Wily steals eight Robot Masters and reprograms them to serve him, then starts another campaign of conquest to prove Light was right all along.

Mega Man is ready to stop him, but to match his skills with Wily, he has been equipped with the original prototype of the Double Gear system, which, while very powerful, is too dangerous a resource. Nevertheless, our hero takes a risk and sets off on another adventure.

Capcom was interested in focusing on the story this time, as was the case with Mega Man 7 and 8, but of course the focus was and will always be on the gameplay and the challenges. In this Mega Man 11 does not disappoint and provides several levels and quite charismatic and demanding bosses … to a certain extent.




There is a sense of care for the title, adequate to today’s releases, but retaining the essence of 30 years ago, with the same features and a few interesting additions that are necessary to escape the shadow of “More of the Same”.

While very similar to previous games in the series, Mega Man 11 has enough new elements to please everyone.

Mega Man 2.0
The main novelty of the game is undoubtedly the Double Gear System, i.e. a set of power-ups that activate special effects for a short time. Speed Gear (activated from R1 on PS4) slows down the action, useful for dodging fast-moving enemies or dodging deadly flames.

On the other hand, the Power Gear (L1) enhances your shot, allowing you to fire two charged shots or a super shot simultaneously if you overload your belt.

The mechanics of the dual gear system are that it prevents the bar from filling completely and overheating the Mega Man’s systems, which takes a long cooldown before it can be used again.

In extreme situations, you’ll have to activate Speed Gear, switch to Power Gear, and deactivate everything until you wait for the strap to empty so that you won’t be in your hand when you need it most.




The stages are a bit longer than usual, but retain the design quality of previous franchise titles. In some stages you will learn how to use scenery elements to progress, such as jumping on bouncing balloons, putting out the fires of platform enemies or lighting boxes, and then the game will perform a joke and set a death trap.

Like anyone who has played Mega Man for a long time, knew that setting up a bias about what a level looks like was a kind of invitation to death, and believe me, you will die a lot.

Though short, the challenge in Mega Man 11 is high, and there are many times when a poorly calculated jump will cost you your life or when you will have to think fast to escape. Very fast.

Interestingly, the same cannot be said for some Bosses or Robot Masters. Some of them, such as Impact Man or Acid Man, can drive you crazy, while others, such as Fuse Man and Tundra Man, are ridiculous for their simplicity.




There are still new features in boss battles: unlike what happened in the past (even due to technical limitations), robot masters now change their attack patterns after losing more than 50% of their energy.

Some use new techniques while others, such as Block Man and Impact Man, transform into big bosses, leading to a whole new strategy as you defeat them.

Inexpensive Mega Man
The Mega Man series has always been known to be very difficult, but in order to allow more people to enjoy the latest titles, Capcom made exceptions.

There are four different difficulty levels in Mega Man 11, of which Normal is a classic for all veterans; Casual is intended for those unfamiliar with the series, while Newcomer is specifically designed for children or the less skilled.

The idea is for everyone to enjoy the game, not just those who grew up with the little blue robot; for them there is a superhero difficulty level, which greatly raises the already high challenge of Normal mode.




There are also support resources in the form of a small Dr. Lighta. Available on the left side of the level selection menu, you can purchase extra lives, various energy cans, and various help items.

You can also get some extra parts, such as the one that allows the Mega Man to move normally when activating Speed Gear (which isn’t always useful, to be quite honest) or one that increases the size of the shots, very good for hitting enemies in difficult situations .

Each item can be purchased with bolts, obtained for defeating enemies; The only downside is that the prices are quite low and the hoarding of life and e-cans is out of this world which reduces the challenge significantly.




Not everything is perfect
This slight imbalance in the store is not the only downside of the Mega Man 11: the save system is not automatic and is a bit confusing as it is to the right of the phase selection, it’s too easy to forget it and believe the system is archiving your progress automatically, feature present in Legacy Collection builds.

Here, if you forget to visit the save screen frequently, you risk losing all your progress when the game is over, and it’s not difficult to confuse the save and load options with each other.




The game is also quite short, like every title in the series; a dedicated player can complete the adventure in less than an hour (there is even a trophy / achievement) and a small replay rate, although there are many challenges to be won in the additional modes.

Also worth mentioning is the complete absence of other previously controlled characters such as Proto Man and Bass.

Application
For many years, Capcom neglected the Mega Man franchise, which eventually prompted the community and other developers to launch potential spiritual successors to the franchise. These range from good examples like the 20XX series and Azure Striker Gunvolt to complete bugs like Mighty No. 9.

Even so, when the developer decided to answer fan requests himself, many feared that the result would not live up to expectations.




It was not so. Capcom treated Mega Man 11 with sympathy and delivered a cool title with great graphics, a level design that maintains the quality of the series, first-class music, and eight new and charismatic Robot Masters.

The game may be quite short like its predecessors, doesn’t offer a replay rate, or has minor glitches, but the difficulty of Mega Man 11 is as high as ever and there are plenty of additional challenges.

More importantly though, the soul of the series remains intact, and Mega Man will still have plenty of pewpewpew to launch, as long as Capcom is committed to doing everything right.

As for us, it remains to be hoped that the sale of the Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 and 2 will lead to the creation of the Mega Man X9.
