10 war strategy games for PC

I like to say that of all the genres, one of the ones I like best – but still the least risky – is strategy wargame. For me, such titles are so much fun that I always looked at them with a little unease because I know that when I start playing one of them, it is very likely that I will completely lose track of time.

But even without devoting myself to these games as much as I should / would like to, I find there is something fascinating about participating in a virtual war and commanding troops on the battlefield when we need to outline the best possible strategy for annihilating enemies. but at the same time take great care to protect our units.

Today we have access to strategy games on a wide variety of topics, from medieval fantasy to space wars. To help you pick one of them, we’ve decided to compile a list of the best titles in the genre. Getting to just 10 of them was quite complicated, and the criteria I adopted were the ones I use almost always: not having more than one game in the same series, and only picking the ones I had more contact with.

This meant I had to skip some highly praised games like Into the Breach, Stellaris, Total War: Warhammer 2, and Wargroove. However, there are others that I love that were captured at the last minute, such as Halo Wars, XCOM, Endless Legend, and Rise of Nations. But as I said before, the limit would only have to be 10, so let’s move on to them.

Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos
Despite delivering a good dose of real-time strategy, Warcraft 3 really shone, bringing RPG elements to the genre and having a much more interesting and deeper story than we’ve seen in such titles.

In addition to influencing many other games of this style, the map created for him, Defense of the Ancients, served as an inspiration for the creation of the MOBA.

It is worth mentioning that even though the game is still fun, even after 16 years, we will soon see a remaster released, which will be called Warcraft III: Reforged and which will most likely turn it back into frebre.

Homeworld Remastered Collection
Often times, the studio’s first draft tries not to risk too much, but that didn’t happen with Relic Entertainment. Created in just two years, Homeworld quickly gained public recognition, recognized as one of the best games of 1999 and serving as a great indicator of what the future of this fantastic developer holds.

In 2015, the series received a beautiful remaster, and a year later, an excellent extension, Deserts of Kharak. An interesting fact is that even after leaving space and fighting on the ground of the planet from which the title takes its name, this prequel was very well received and even because it was developed by several members of the original team, it survived to the legacy left by the first game.

Age of Empires II: HD Edition
There are games that pleased a lot of people when they first came out, there are games that have become classics, and there is Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings. If you’ve gone through the 90’s and had access to a computer, it’s virtually impossible not to be in one of the best strategy wargames ever made!

In 2013, Microsoft released a remaster of this legendary game, and although it was criticized for not bringing anything new, the mere fact of allowing us to repeat one of the funniest titles of all time would be enough to make many people happy.

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty
12 years after conquering a legion of fans with the first StarCraft, Blizzard returned to the series in 2010 with a game that showed us that it was worth the wait. Thanks to the fascinating campaign and gameplay that made us want to play more and more, Wings of Liberty was a huge success, selling over three million copies in just the first month.

The game only grew in popularity over time as it became free a few years later and received two beautiful add-ons, Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void. The power of StarCraft II in esports also contributed to this, and the StarCraft II World Championship Series has long been one of the most important championships in the world.

A company of heroes
I know many will find it overkill, but if I had to pick my favorite strategy game, I’d stick with Company of Heroes. Recreating WWII, like what we’ve seen in cinema over the years, the tension we feel when we face stages in this game is indescribable.

I will never forget a mission where we must protect the village from enemy invasion, we must deploy our troops to block the bridges and prevent the Germans from approaching. When I first played it, it felt like I was left for hours in this siege, and my brain thought the attacks would never end.

Company of Heroes is a game that can handle a huge dramatic payload, and although the soldiers we control have no names and can be replaced at almost any time, I have always mourned the death of everyone who fought under my command.

The Sid Meier Civilization IV
https://anotepad.com/notes/qe6jjc9k
While Civilization VI can be considered the most accessible chapter in the series, many defend the fourth not only as the apex of the series, but as the best 4X strategy game (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate) ever. Praise for the Civ4 falls in several aspects, from much better graphics compared to its predecessor, to artificial intelligence, worth firing even the most demanding brains.

This is a game for those looking for a less crazy experience as the actions alternate. However, this does not mean that you will not have very tight time and you will not have to be very careful as the slightest mistake can mean the failure of the entire campaign.

Supreme Commander

Serving as the spiritual successor to Total Annihilation, Supreme Commander has the advantage of providing something that few strategic wargames can do: put us in the middle of a colossal-proportional battle, with each army having hundreds of units that can take the same amount. the earth as well as the sky and the sea.

An interesting fact, however, is that we will start matches with only one unit, the “Supreme Commander”, who will have to be protected at all costs and who will soon be surrounded by an absurd number of subordinates. Believe me, the juggling we have to do to control everything is impressive and quite challenging.

At the time of its launch, the Commander in Chief was considered a resource pig, and an interesting detail is that it already had support for a second monitor that could be used for a broader view of the battlefield and possibly gain an advantage over our opponents that way.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II
Although it has a slightly different gameplay than its predecessor and is therefore considered by some to be inferior, Dawn of War II is in my opinion another gem of Relic Entertainment. We had no base construction in it, and the need to protect the units behind the facilities was essential to avoid further damage, which was very different to what we had at the time.

In addition to some RPG elements, the cool feature of this game is that you can play the campaign with the help of a friend, which is unusual for a war strategy game. For me, the very idea of having to coordinate with someone else should already make the game catch the attention of a lot of people.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2
Pinning just one chapter in a series with so many is very hard to do, but when it comes to Command & Conquer, many fans say Red Alert 2 was the series’ highest point. From clunky, non-interactive scenes that look more like something out of the Record soap opera, to the intricate graphics, this game has been loved by many.

Okay, he wasn’t very innovative, but the gameplay was pretty solid and most of all great fun. But do you want to know the truth? Where else could we see a battle involving psychic soldiers, dogs, and even a herd of dolphins fighting a giant communist squid?

Total War: Shogun 2
Like Supreme Commander, the Total War series has always attracted attention with its massive battles, but if we had futuristic combat in this game, here we often focused on the past. In the case of Shogun 2, as the name suggests, the attempt was to recreate the conflicts in 16th-century Japan.

In the game, we will have to choose one of the eight available clans to try to control territories, each of which will have specific characteristics such as special units, starting point and political differences. The game may have lost some of the greatness of its predecessors such as Empire: Total War, but it is often praised for being more accessible to new players and offering the franchise’s good old-fashioned strategic experience.
