THE PROBLEM IN A NUTSHELL


Every year , about 1 million tons of plastic pollution enter the world's oceans. A majority of it is derived from rivers. Of this the majority of it remains afloat in the ocean for a short period of time.


Around half of the plastic that is floating in the ocean eventually sinks to the bottom, and a large amount of garbage is deposited in the sea sediment. Our modelling shows that over 80% of the plastic floating can be found on beaches close to the point from which it entered the ocean. 97% of them could end up on land within one year. Only a fraction of plastics emissions can be eluded from the reach of coastal areas and move to the open ocean. It is possible for that the plastic will remain in the ocean for quite a while when it gets there.


Subtropical oceanic geyres comprise five locations where plastic builds up in the oceans. These are basically massive circular currents that trap floating rubbish inside them. These are the locations of five garbage areas in the ocean.


The ocean garbage patch is the equivalent to the corner in your bedroom, where you cleaned up the mess that you left behind. The notorious Great Pacific Garbage Patch, situated between Hawaii and California, is the most heavily polluted and studied. While it covers only 0.5 percent of the ocean's surface the GPGP is believed to hold more than half of the plastics floating in the oceans.

Make sure you get rid of garbage in a timely manner


Recycling and reuse whenever possible.
