One of the newest innovations in IP telephony systems is SIP Trunking. By looking at this standard, you'll see that the SIP trunk actually allows you to use your computer's microphone and speakers to make calls while the application is on. What the application does, in addition to preventing unauthorized access to your system, is also to filter out important data packets. When SIP trunks are used with SIP soft clients, however, there's a whole other level of integration that needs to happen. Setting up a SIP trunk over the Internet is not something that should be done without proper preparation. A good idea would be to first check whether your company has proper SIP trunking plans that would allow you to do so. Then, it would be a good idea to install a firewall on your company's network that is compatible with the SIP protocol. With the help of a high quality firewall and a reliable SIP trunking provider, your company will be able to ensure that all incoming and outgoing SIP traffic is properly blocked.

In order to get started, you will need to have separate lines from your normal telephone system. These lines should connect to the SIP trunks on the Internet and to your private network. With the proper routing, data can be sent between the two systems and with the proper authentication, the data can be transmitted over the Internet without being intercepted.
