Nine Steps To More Effective Parenting For Parents

At times, parenting can feel like you’re in in an airplane in turbulence in a thunderstorm and the oxygen masks have dropped. As with on a plane, when parenting it’s important to remain calm and put your oxygen mask on first before you help your children. Once that’s accomplished you can give specific instructions of what to do, with lots of positive feedback for good behavior. Understanding developmental milestones can help a parent attend to and praise steps toward that milestone.

Ironically, overly harsh or authoritarian styles of parenting can have the same effect. However, it is essential that children know they can talk to parents about their concerns and have their questions answered truthfully. With children who seek out a conversation, this involves providing only as much information as they have asked for. With children who do not seek out a conversation, be on the lookout for signs of distress or changes in behavior (e.g. a child who becomes more clingy or aggressive).

Overnight if the noncustodial parent has exercised regular care responsibilities for the child but not to exceed one 24 hour period per week. Children who notice everything happening around them may need to have fewer play choices so that they can experience success. Responses to the objections shall be filed with the court and served on the Parenting Coordinator and all other parties within ten days after the objection is served. A Parenting Coordinator shall advise the appointing court and the parties of any potential conflict of interest, and of any action taken or proposed, to resolve the conflict. After the appropriate disclosure, the Parenting Coordinator may continue to serve with the written agreement of all parties. However, if a conflict of interest clearly impairs a Parenting Coordinator’s impartiality, the Parenting Coordinator shall withdraw or be removed. It is important to understand that a child is more likely to enjoy these experiences when supported by both parents. There will be occasions when scheduled parenting times may need to be adjusted because of illnesses or special family events such as weddings, funerals, reunions, and the like. Each parent should accommodate the other in making the adjustment so that the child may attend the family event. After considering the child's best interests, the parent who lost parenting time may decide to forego the “make-up” time.

Keep the difference between weekdays and weekends. During weekdays when your child would have been at school, this timetable should include learning activities as recommended by your school. Keep in mind that home learning during this time will not be the same as a regular school day.

When talking to your child about their feelings, stop what you are doing and listen carefully. Avoid telling your child how they should feel (Don’t worry about that). Instead, let your child know it is OK to be worried, sad, angry or disappointed. Talking or drawing can help children better understand their own feelings and concerns.
