Nine Steps To More Effective Parenting For Parents
Based on your feedback, we’re in the process of developing education that is consciously inclusive of LGBTQ+ children, parents, and caregivers. As we expand our information, we invite you to share your stories about raising a child that is LGBTQ+ or being an LGBTQ+ parent at Our goal is to meet your needs and acknowledge your unique challenges. At times, parenting can feel like you’re in in an airplane in turbulence in a thunderstorm and the oxygen masks have dropped. As with on a plane, when parenting it’s important to remain calm and put your oxygen mask on first before you help your children. Once that’s accomplished you can give specific instructions of what to do, with lots of positive feedback for good behavior. Understanding developmental milestones can help a parent attend to and praise steps toward that milestone.
What is a dragon parent? Dragon mothers are mothers who grieve for children who have died or are terminally ill.

If the parents cannot agree on “make-up” time, the parent who lost the time shall select the “make-up” time within one month of the missed time. Use of Term “Parenting Time.” Throughout these Guidelines the words “parenting time” have been used instead of the word “visitation” so as to emphasize the importance of the time a parent spends with a child. The concept that a non-custodial parent “visits” with a child does not convey the reality of the continuing parent-child relationship.

They help create a safe base from which they can explore, learn, and relate to others. Parents who show their child respect are also showing them that it is a choice. Respect is connected to their values, which will develop by seeing positive role models around them. In day-to-day life, respecting your child in practice means swapping gentle requests for harsh commands, and extending invitations for partnership in lieu of fear-based warnings. "communication book" to communicate with each other on the child’s education, health care, and activities.
Ironically, overly harsh or authoritarian styles of parenting can have the same effect. Each parent shall promptly notify the other parent of all organized events in a child's life which permit parental and family participation. Symptoms include the baby's face turning red, the belly is distended, the feet may be cold, the hands clenched, and the legs may alternate between being flexed or extended. The written report shall include an explanation as to how the recommended change is expected to benefit the family as a whole.
Ideally, we think about our children and what they need from us at specific points in time. For example, while a parent might not typically adopt an authoritarian parenting style, there might be times in a child’s life when that style is needed. Or you might know an authoritarian parent who is nurturing, contrary to the description above.
Parenting is a process that prepares your child for independence. As your child grows and develops, there are many things you can do to help your child. These links will help you learn more about your child’s development, positive parenting, safety, and health at each stage of your child’s life. Parents often feel isolated and alone when parenting adolescents.
If such notice is not given, the custodial parent shall make the selection. For a child 3 and 4 years of age, up to six one week segments annually, each separated by at least weeks. Including the pickup and return of the child, no segment shall exceed eight days. New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day shall not be considered separate holidays under the Parenting Time Guidelines. In odd numbered years, the non-custodial parent shall have the first one half (1/2) of the Christmas vacation and custodial parent shall have the second one half (1/2) of the Christmas vacation. In even numbered years, the custodial parent shall have the first one half (1/2) of the Christmas vacation and non-custodial parent shall have the second one half (1/2) of the Christmas vacation.
However, it is essential that children know they can talk to parents about their concerns and have their questions answered truthfully. With children who seek out a conversation, this involves providing only as much information as they have asked for. With children who do not seek out a conversation, be on the lookout for signs of distress or changes in behavior (e.g. a child who becomes more clingy or aggressive).

A teenager who does what is expected should be offered more freedom and a wider range of choices. It is helpful if a teenager is reminded of the good decisions that have caused the teen to be given more privileges. If a teen is helped to see that privileges are earned and not natural “rights” he or she will be more likely to realize that the key to getting more freedom is to behave well. If rules are not followed, appropriate consequences should result. A teenager who does not make good use of independence should have less of it.

Overnight if the noncustodial parent has exercised regular care responsibilities for the child but not to exceed one 24 hour period per week. It is the responsibility of both parents to ensure their child is properly clothed. The non-custodial parent may wish to have a basic supply of clothing available for the child at his or her home.
Children who notice everything happening around them may need to have fewer play choices so that they can experience success. When we give a five-minute warning to the child that is slow-to-adapt in transitions, it doesn’t matter what their ability is. All children can benefit from a ‘heads up’ about a transition. If we pack a bag of extra snacks for the child that has an irregular biological clock, we can do the same for a child with a diagnosed medical need.

Responses to the objections shall be filed with the court and served on the Parenting Coordinator and all other parties within ten days after the objection is served. A Parenting Coordinator shall advise the appointing court and the parties of any potential conflict of interest, and of any action taken or proposed, to resolve the conflict. After the appropriate disclosure, the Parenting Coordinator may continue to serve with the written agreement of all parties. However, if a conflict of interest clearly impairs a Parenting Coordinator’s impartiality, the Parenting Coordinator shall withdraw or be removed. A Parenting Coordinator shall maintain independence; objectivity; and impartiality, including avoiding the appearance of partiality, in dealings with parties and professionals, both in and out of the courtroom. The court has the discretion to apportion the fee between the parties absent an agreement.

It is important to understand that a child is more likely to enjoy these experiences when supported by both parents. There will be occasions when scheduled parenting times may need to be adjusted because of illnesses or special family events such as weddings, funerals, reunions, and the like. Each parent should accommodate the other in making the adjustment so that the child may attend the family event. After considering the child's best interests, the parent who lost parenting time may decide to forego the “make-up” time.

Keep the difference between weekdays and weekends. During weekdays when your child would have been at school, this timetable should include learning activities as recommended by your school. Keep in mind that home learning during this time will not be the same as a regular school day.

When talking to your child about their feelings, stop what you are doing and listen carefully. Avoid telling your child how they should feel (Don’t worry about that). Instead, let your child know it is OK to be worried, sad, angry or disappointed. Talking or drawing can help children better understand their own feelings and concerns.
