What is an Activist?
An activist is defined by Webster as a public speaker who expresses opinions or advocacy for political or social change. In the US, the term "an activist" is most often associated with political demonstrations, such as civil rights demonstrations. Activists differ according to the cause they are working on. For example, African American environmentalists are considered politically active while abortion rights advocates are considered to be more radical.

According to Merriam Webster, the meaning of the word "activist" is "one who peacefully protest against unjust acts or laws". The second meaning of the word "activist" is "one who advocates or promotes the use of force or other measures for social or political change, especially for social change against unjustifiable discrimination". Similarly, the Oxford Dictionary defines the word "activist" as "one who practices any form of civil disobedience especially by peaceful and orderly disobedience". Finally, the Merriam Webster's dictionary defines the word "activist" as "a person who makes personal efforts to improve the conditions of the poor or the needy or to secure their rights".

Activism can take many different forms. Campaigns, church visits, and political demonstrations are all forms of activism. And every type of activism requires specific tactics to make it successful. However, there are a number of common strategies that activists use to bring about change. These include:

Organising for Social Change. Activists gather together in groups to promote change through peaceful demonstration. Often, the activists are those with traditionally marginalised identities. Writing for Change. An activist is not just saying words; they are also sharing ideas, drawing people into action, and building coalitions. Deep Discussions on Minorities. Because of the unique experiences that African Americans face, many African Americans forget that their place in society is rooted in history, not just current days. Activists should speak with African Americans on a personal level about the impact of racism on their lives. By listening and addressing the unique needs of the marginalised identities, an African American could begin to realise the profound beauty that racism has created in America.

Use of Mass Media. Activists should not limit their scope to speaking out against corporations that have wronged minorities. Rather, activists should harness the power of the media, using it as a powerful resource to spread their message. activist investors such as Blackrock use their influence among media outlets to make positive news about issues important to black Americans. Additionally, activists should speak out about their concerns with the press, highlighting both the negative and positive aspects of such stories.

Use of Non-Profit Corporations. This allows activists to build long-term relationships with corporate giants that could help further their cause. Some famous activist investors include George Soros and Donald Trump. In addition to using social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to spread information about their investments, activists should also use company blogs, investor websites, and personal accounts on the company's web pages to talk about their work.
