A retinal scan (or retinal detachment scan) is a non-invasive biometric method which employs unique geometric patterns on the cornea of the patient's eye. The retinal detachment itself is usually painless but can be painful for some individuals. However, many physicians feel that this form of diagnostic imaging provides clearer images of the underlying retina. It isn't to be mistaken with other ophthalmological techniques: iris detection, commonly known as an "Iris scan", and peripheral eye blood vessel determination which use only the vessels in the outer third of the retina.
While there are some inherent limitations of retinal scanning, it has provided medical professionals with important information in the treatment of many common chronic health conditions. Patients can benefit from this diagnostic test when they have: vision problems, headaches, migraines, certain diseases of the eye, or chronic health conditions such as congestive heart failure, circulation problems such as varicose veins and spider veins, diabetes, polyps, or brain tumors. Some patients may experience the screening even more often if they have specific conditions already, or if they are suffering from certain chronic health conditions. For example, if you have congestive heart failure, your doctor may request a retinal scan in order to determine your kidneys and liver function.
While some patients may receive the services of a normal doctor/eye clinic and a retinal scan at the same time, others may choose to have a separate exam. Typically, a separate exam is needed for those who suffer from chronic health conditions because a single visit would be too much of a hassle for them. A separate exam will also allow the doctor to identify vessels in the retina which he/she could not see in a routine examination. This is because the retina consists of several layers of tissue, which are made up of individual layers of photoreceptor cells and then thinning layers of Purkinje fibers. Normally, the thickness of the tissue is consistent between layers.
A retinal scan cannot positively identify if the patient has a health condition in its early stages. Hence, the results are only suggestive. When you go in for a retinal scan, the technician will place one or two fingers in front of the eye, in the mid-point between the center of the iris and the thyroid part of the eye. With the help of a special device, the technicians will scan the patient's retinal and produce a 3D image of the retina. Through the help of the equipment, the doctors will be able to detect vessels and growths that could not be seen with the naked eye.
A retinal scan uses the method of light detection in order to determine the presence of abnormalities in the retina. By using the scanner, the doctor can see into the eye simply by detecting light traces. Light rays streaming from the eyes fall on the scanner and absorb its energy. This absorbed energy converts the light into heat, which is then detected by the scanner. Through the aid of the instrument, doctors are able to identify if there are any abnormalities in the eye.
The retinal scan detects vessels that are not visible to the naked eye. For instance, when you look at a picture of a car, you can see the interior parts but not the roof. This is because the retina has a layer of fluid between the lens and the retina, called the vitreous gel. Behind email list company of vitreous gel is the choroid, which contains blood. Since vessels located behind the choroid cannot be seen with the naked eye, they are identified using the scanner.
In the past, retinal scanners could provide images of only part of the eye. But the recent models of retinal scanners have an integrated scanner that can scan the cornea, the lens, and the iris of the eye. It also has an optical lens separator that can correct eye misalignments. This makes it possible for the doctor to provide an accurate diagnosis of glaucoma or macular degeneration even if the patient's eyes are not open. Moreover, an unperceived beam of low-energy infrared light entering the eye through the choroidal pathway can also be detected.
This technology also offers other benefits such as the detection of tumor growths and abnormal bone growths. Through an unperceived beam of light, the scanner can also detect and treat retinal diseases such as cataract and macular degeneration. In addition, an unperceived beam of light can also help in detecting eye problems such as dry eye, conjunctivitis, and dry eye syndrome. Because of these, it is now known that a retinal scan accurately identifies abnormalities in the eye before they produce signs and symptoms that a patient may experience.
