You are contemplating long-distance trip away from home? Make sure to pack digital materials in case WiFi goes down
I'd like to share with you a story from my last Arctic cruise. It sounded wonderful, National Geographic's trip thru the Arctic ice , complete with Polar bears. There would be ice that eyes could see the snow and ice that was all around. Machines made by humans were set to battle the elements and cut through the frozen northern desert. It sounded like an enormous project, a massive battle with the weather and the pole.

I was advised to carry the maximum amount of technology I could into my luggage. I did take my laptop along and added a huge display to increase the workspace. According to the experts, the electricity was not a problem. It was going to be a tough task, but I didn't know what to anticipate. I had no idea that, just two days into the 14-day trial and my Internet connection would go down and I would be without internet access for 10 days. It happened, and I was shocked. No trip, regardless of how remote or hard, is supposed to result in a disconnect from the internet. There was no doubt that there was some unfinished business that I had to resolve during the following week, but I also didn't prepare myself for the time off.

It doesn't matter if you have to shut down your internet. Internet is everywhere. If your home network is experiencing temporary problems, it is possible to find an area McDonalds and utilize their complimentary WiFi connection to do what you need. You could even take your laptop and sit down in the cafe at Starbucks for the rest of your life or sit down at a table and just surf the Internet to the fullest extent you wish. There's no cafe or restaurant café that is able to provide electricity up north. It's not near any electricity source. You can't get the internet for free everywhere. In such situations there are two options for escape: prepare to be disconnected from your home or get satellite connection.

I can't afford a satellite phone, it is too costly, particularly to use for Internet access. I'll create an audio and video library to use for the next adventure without Internet. The last time I was online, I only had 2 songs. The songs were downloaded back in the day and all I was able to listen to were three jazz songs and a song I couldn't remember what it was called. That's it. Four songs in two weeks of nothingness. If I had known this was the case, I would have prepared. I would have loaded my laptop up with TV shows, films music videos, audio files that contained music and podcasts. My most loved podcasts would be my soundtrack for day. It's easy to download them and then convert into mp3 and save them on my laptop. After that, I could just sit in my bedroom and listen to all the things I like at home, but I never had the time. That could have been my gold hour which is about two weeks worth of gold. But, it ended up being two weeks of staring at a ceiling and trying to catch passengers every time there was a sound coming from the corridors.
The trip was empty literally and metaphorically. I've never felt so bored. The ice was thick, and I knew that could cause problems later on and the boat was forced to turn around and pull back to civilization. It was not a surprise. However, hours upon hours of idle time could easily have been spent listening to podcasts, viewing DIY videos on repairs for the home, or enjoying music. The next time, I'll convert YouTube videos from mp4 into mp3 format on the laptop. Bring these along to listen to your most loved music right on your laptop. Music never makes you feel down. Keep in mind that Netflix and Hulu apps allow you to download films and shows to your computer to view offline. Also, these can be taken with you when you travel long distances to the Arctic. Don't waste your time with boredom. Best of luck!
