When someone receives a trophy, it's really a clear statement about personal achievement.

A trophy can be tangible proof their achievement – much more so when compared to a certificate or possibly a plaque. They're talking points – conversation starters – plus they provide recipient a way to relive their special moment.

In all seriousness, a trophy are able to do that of a piece of paper can't. A trophy is 'evidence' that the face has been doing their utmost and achieved something special. And which winner can resist displaying their achievements on their own desk, mantelpiece or windowsill for many to see.

The most popular engraving mistakes are already made on what's been referred to as the most significant sporting trophy on earth - the Stanley Cup.

The Stanley Cup is the ice hockey trophy awarded annually to the National Hockey League (NHL) playoffs champion. It's recognized for a lot of reasons, not least of all because of most the mistakes around the engraving, as well as a contributing factor may just be that the names of ALL the winning players, coaches, management and club staff are engraved around the trophy...meaning t here 's considerably more room for error.

For example, Dickie Moore won six cups and his name was spelled five different methods around the badge, the engraving for Glenn Hall became available as 'Glin', Bob Gainey turned into 'Gainy', the 1972 Boston Bruins arrived as 'Bqstqn' and Pat McReavy proved to McCeavy.

Imagine the stress for the engraver to make it on each of the high profile trophies and plaques around the world. One from the longest-serving engravers was Alex Harvey, who engraved the champion golfer in the year' on the Claret Jug for upwards of thirty years - and who NEVER developed a mistake on the precious trophy cup
