The game begins with each player dealing their cards. Each player gets 2 cards, while 5 cards are placed face down on the table. The cards you have will allow you to place your wagers, raise, re-raise or fold. The betting continues up to the moment that the five cards on each side of the table are revealed. The player with the best five-card hand from his two cards in possession and the five cards on the table then wins.

It is typically played with a Limit betting arrangement, where the bets are in set increments. For instance, in a $4/$8 limit game the bets are incremented in $4 during the initial 2 betting rounds, and then the increments of $8 on the successive 3 betting rounds.

The dealer deals 3 cards starting from his/her left side to all players. He deals 2 cards facing down and 1 card facing up. The 2 down cards may also be known as pocket or holes cards.

A pre-flop round of betting ensues, that is to say before the flop (or before the first three community cards are turned over), the small and big blinds are posted. The player to your left of the dealer posts the small blind. The player to your left of that blind posts the large blind. The big blind is twice as large as the small blind. If you are playing limit hold'em then the bigblind is equal to the limit and the smaller blind is half. So if the limit is $10/20, the big blind is $10 and the small blind would be $5.

Each game of Omaha poker begins with the small blind. The big blind goes to the second player. Blinds, which are obligatory bets, are what start the Omaha poker table. The responsibility of paying the blinds shifts clockwise around the poker table so that all players will contribute to the poker game.
