The Sacred Heart Church
The Sacred Heart Church has been around for over 100 years. The original structure was built in 1876 and was dedicated by Cardinal McCloskey on October 21, 1877. Later, the church was divided into two separate parishes, one of which became a Catholic church in 1917. On the same day, Father Mullen resigned, and his successor, Rev. John J. Lennon, served as pastor for over thirty years. On April 10, 1908, the parish celebrated its first Sunday Mass in the new school. In the early 1900s, the ladies' guild began to raise funds for improvements and renovations. In 1969, a new altar was installed. In the early 1970s, the parish purchased additional property, and renovations took place including the roof replacement and an interior painting.

The parish of the Sacred Heart Church began in 1875, and served the territory previously served by St. Augustine's parish. During this time, Father Mullen purchased a hall at 165th Street and Lind Avenue. The first Mass was celebrated there on June 20, 1875. In addition to the new church, the Sacred-Heart school is connected to the Sacred-Heart School, a parish that dates back to the seventeenth century.
