Vaping Facts You Need to Know
You may be tempted to turn to vaping with electronic devices (e-cigarettes, vape pens, as well as other non-disposable, disposable device for smoking) as a means to ease the transition from smoking cigarettes in the traditional way to not smoking at all. But is smoking electronic cigarettes (also called vaping) more beneficial than using tobacco products? Will e-cigarettes aid you to quit smoking cigarettes once and for all? Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease has shared health information regarding smoking e-cigarettes.

1 Vaping is less harmful than smokingcigarettes, however it's not entirely safe.

E-cigarettes heat nicotine (extracted from tobacco) flavorings, flavorings, and other chemicals to create an aerosol that you inhale. Regular tobacco cigarettes contain 7000 chemicals, many which are toxic. While we're not sure which chemicals are in electronic cigarettes, Blaha says "There's almost no doubt that vaping exposes you to fewer toxic chemicals than smoking traditional cigarettes."

However, there has been an upsurge of lung injuries and deaths that are associated vaping. In February of 2020, in February 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed 2,807 cases of e-cigarette or vaping-related airway injury (EVALI) and more than 68 deaths due to this condition.

"These cases are believed to concern people who alter their vaping device or are using counterfeit e-liquids. This is especially the case for vape products that contain THC," explains Blaha.

The CDC has identified vitamin E is acetate as a chemical that could be a cause of concern for those suffering from EVALI. Vitamin E acetate is a common thickening agent employed in THC vaping products, and it was identified in all samples of lung fluid from patients suffering from EVALI, as determined and analyzed by CDC.

The CDC encourages people to:

Avoid using e-cigarettes that contain THC also known as vaping.

Avoid using informal sources for example, relatives, friends or online merchants to purchase the device for vaping.

Do not modify or add any substance to a vaping device that is not permitted by the manufacturer.

Research by The Johns Hopkins University on vape ingredients released in October 2021 shows thousands of chemical ingredients used in vape brands, most of which remain unidentified. Some of the ones they could determine were potentially harmful chemicals, including caffeine. three chemicals not previously seen in electronic cigarettes as well as a pesticide, and two flavorings associated with negative effects on breathing and respiratory irritation.

2. Research suggests that smoking is detrimental to your lungs and heart.

Nicotine is the most prominent ingredient in regular cigarettes as well as e-cigarettes. it's highly addictive. You will crave the smoke and can cause withdrawal symptoms if not addressing the craving. Nicotine can be a dangerous substance. It increases your blood pressure, and also increases the amount of adrenaline, which in turn increases your heart rate as well as the likelihood of having a heart attack.

Does vaping harm you? There are a lot of unknowns regarding smoking e-cigarettes, including what chemicals make up the vapor and how they affect your physical health in the long run. "People need to understand that e-cigarettes are potentially dangerous to your health," claims Blaha. "Emerging data suggest links to chronic lung disease and asthma, and correlations between dual usage of electronic cigarettes and smoking cigarettes with cardiovascular disease. You're exposed to a myriad of chemicals in which we aren't sure of the details and are likely to not be healthy."

Electronic cigarettes are as addictive as traditional ones.

Both cigarettes, e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes contain nicotine, and research suggests that it may be as addictive heroin and cocaine. But, as per Blaha most users of e-cigarettes receive more nicotine than they would get from a combustible tobacco product. Customers can purchase extra-strong cartridges that contain more nicotine, or raise the voltage of the e-cigarette, resulting in more nicotine substance.

Electronic cigarettes aren't a great smoking method for quitting.

While they've been marketed for their ability to aid people quit smoking cigarettes, e-cigarettes aren't yet granted Food and Drug Administration approval as devices to quit smoking. A recent study showed that the majority people who planned to use e-cigarettes to kick the nicotine habit ended up remaining with traditional and e-cigarettes.

To address the EVALI outbreak In light of the EVALI outbreak, the CDC urges users of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation to assess the risks and advantages and first look into other smoking cessation alternatives approved by the FDA.

5 A new generation is addicted to nicotine.

With young people, e-cigarettes especially disposable ones have more popularity than any typical tobacco brand. From the National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than 2 million U.S. middle and high school students reported using e-cigarettes in 2021, with over 8 percent of those youth using flavored e-cigarettes.

According to Blaha, there are three reasons e-cigarettes may be particularly enticing to young people. Many teens believe that vaping is not as harmful as smoking. In addition, e-cigarettes are cheaper price per use than traditional cigarettes. Furthermore, young people and adults appreciate the absence of smoke appealing. E-cigarettes are odorless and are able to lessen the stigmas associated with smoking cigarettes.

"What I find most concerning about the rise of vaping is that people who would've never smoked otherwise, especially youth, are taking up the habit," says Blaha. "It's the same thing when you move from smoking cigarettes into vaping. But it's quite another thing when you begin using nicotine with vaping. Then, the addiction to nicotine can result in the need for traditional tobacco products in the future."

Research from the CDC confirms that vaping among youth has decreased somewhat over the past year, but not as much as the year 2020. Kids being stuck at home under the supervision of their parents during the COVID-19 outbreak could have a role in that.

Young people's preferences change often and, when being surveyed, they may not consider making use of disposable items like "puff bars" as vaping. The same CDC report states that disposable e-cigarette usage has increased by 1000 percent among high schoolers and 400 percent among middle school students from the year 2019.

Vaping and the COVID-19 Pandemic

At the time the coronavirus pandemic occurred, Blaha claims, the data prove that the number of people who e-cigarettes sold decreased most likely because people were staying in their homes and avoiding shops or public areas.

But Blaha recognizes a pattern that makes him nervous: the increase using e-cigarettes on a daily basis among any vape vape users. "The amount of users are using vape daily was previously one in 5, but the number is now up quite a bit, and that's worrying since it indicates a greater dependence on nicotine. I'm keeping an eye on that."

What Is Vaping? Everything You Need To Know

How Does Vape Work?

Vaping devices vary in shape, size , and colors. They generate an aerosol from heating up a liquid that can be made up of flavorings , as well as other chemicals that can make vaping less harsh (initially at the very least) than smoking. The liquid provides nicotine, marijuana, or other narcotics to the user through a mouthpiece that is inhaled into the lungs . It is then and expelled through mouth or nose.

Vaping Health and Safety Risks

While many of these products typically come with a liquid containing around one-third of the nicotine that is found in cigarettes, for instance, one JUULpod containing 5% strength is intended to replace a full pack of cigarettes with the strength of nicotine, vaping consumers still face some health-related and safety concerns.

Nicotine, a stimulant which could harm the developing adolescent brain (which continues to expand up to about 25 years age) is present in a variety of electronic cigarettes, but often not listed on the packaging in accordance with a recent CDC study.

The consumption of nicotine by adolescents in their developing brains can cause harm to parts that control:

Learning

Mood

Attention

Control by impulse

Nicotine use affects how the synapses--connections between brain cells--are formed. Continuous use during adolescence might be a risk factor for the development of addiction to cigarettes and other drugs.

Other than nicotine vaping liquid, vaping and later Vapor may also contain harmful components, such as

Cancer-causing chemicals

Metals that are heavy, like lead, tin, and nickel

Flavorings, such as diacetyl an ingredient that is linked to lung disease

Organic compounds with volatile compounds

Ultra-fine particles, which are able to be inhaled deep into the lungs

Scientists are still actively studying the impacts of vaping, specifically around Vitamin E Acetate, which is a chemical that is added to certain liquids for vaping to help dilute. There were more than 2,500 users hospitalized due to vaping injuries as of December 17, 2019. Vaping also caused 54 deaths across 27 states and the District of Columbia.

Who is Vaping?

According to 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) data, 3.6 million children in middle school and high schools use e-cigarettes. Usage, defined as at least one per of the past thirty days, has grown by 78 percent from 11.7 to 20.8 percent in 2018.

The increase in e-cigarette usage between middle school and high school students has resulted in an increase in tobacco consumption by 38 percent for high schoolers and 29 percent for middle schoolers.

E-cigarette use isn't limited to teens. Nine percent of U.S. adults say they "regularly or occasionally" vape.

E-cigarettes could assist adult smokers who not pregnant , if used as the sole substitute for regular cigarettes and other tobacco products.

E-cigarettes are not safe for youth, young adults, also pregnant or lactating women as well as adults who do not currently smoke tobacco.

E-cigarettes can be used of benefiting some individuals and harm others, scientists still have much to discover about whether electronic cigarettes are effective to quit smoking.

If you've never otherwise used tobacco products other than electronic cigarettes, you shouldn't begin.

Further research is needed to better understand the long-term health effects.
