Going on a long, faraway trip? It is important to have the necessary digital devices that you require prior to the time when WiFi ceases to function.
Let me tell you about my trip last year aboard a cruise ship through the Arctic. It sounded wonderful, National Geographic trip thru ice and back, with Polar bears and various other species. There was going to be ice everywhere, snow everywhere. Man-made machines were designed to beat the elements and get through the frozen landscape of the northern wilderness. It sounded amazing, like an epic combat with weather and the north.

I was advised to carry the most technologically advanced equipment I could fit in my suitcases. I did manage to pack my laptop, and also add an extra large screen to increase my working space. It was all electric I was told that. What was going to be the first test was unconvinced to me.. I didn't know that 2 days into the 14 day trip I will be without Internet connection, and then disappear from the planet Earth for the next 10 days. It was a complete shock to me when it was happening. No trip should, however complicated or remote, result in me to become disconnected from the technological world. I did not plan the time off, and not only did I have an unfinished project that I needed to attend to in the week ahead, but I also had other things I had to accomplish.

The majority of people don't mind if they must disconnect from the internet. Internet is available wherever you are. If your internet connection is not working at home and you are unable to connect, there is always the nearest McDonalds nearby and make use of their free WiFi to access the information you need. You can also bring your laptop and lounge at Starbucks all day. The only restaurant or cafe that can assist you in the north. It's a long way to the closest generator which produces electricity. There's not a free Internet nearby.. There are two options to get out in such situations. You could be offline or bring a satellite internet connection.

I cannot afford a satellite phone. It's too expensive particularly for Internet access. I'll prepare an audio and video library for my next adventure without Internet. Last time I had 2 songs that were both mockingly downloaded in the past and all I was able to listen to was three jazzy songs and some famous song I didn't even know the name. This is it. 4 songs in 2 weeks of Insanity. If I knew this was the case, I would have prepared. I would have loaded my computer with television shows and movies as well as lots of music videos. I could have spent hours listening to my favorite podcasts. It's simple to download them, then convert them to mp3 for saving on my laptop. After that, I could just lay in my bed listening to all the things I like at home, but not have the time. It could be my gold hour and would have been two weeks' worth of gold. It turned out to be two weeks of looking at the ceiling and trying to catch passengers every time there was a sound from the corridors.


The trip was empty literally and metaphorically. I've never been this bored. I knew that the ice was too thick, and the boat was left with no choice but to turn around and return to civilization. It was not a surprise. However, hours upon hours of idle time could have been listening to podcasts, watching videos for DIY repairs for the home, or enjoying music. Next time, I will convert Youtube videos from mp4 into MP3 format on my laptop. Bring them with you and listen to your favorite songs right from your laptop. No need to be down, music will always lift your spirits. Remember that Netflix and Hulu apps let you download movies and shows on your computer to watch offline. Also, these can be taken with you for long journeys across the Arctic. Be sure to stay away your time bored. Have fun!
