The article 'by Steven McIntosh (an entertainment reporter) from the British newspaper BBC News, talks about the viral incident that occurred on March 27th, 2022, between the Hollywood star Will Smith and the Comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars Awards

The headline 'Why did Will Smith hit Chris Rock at the Oscars?' pretty much reveals the entire subject of the article as it is quite straightforward, no illusions or misconceptions just straight to the point. The reporter clearly aims to inform the reader about the tragedy that occurred at the most prestigious and significant awards in the entertainment industry worldwide (the Oscars)

Short Recap of the Article:
Going off-script. Chris Rock‘s joke about Jada Pinkett Smith during the 2022 Oscars didn’t land well with the actress or her husband, Will Smith.

“Jada, I love you. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it. Alright?” Rock joked during the awards show on Sunday, March 27, adding, “That was a nice one.”

Jada, for her part, was seen rolling her eyes on screen before Will walked up to the stage and slapped Rock. The incident, which originally appeared scripted, caused ABC to mute the live segment. The King Richard star returned to his seat before saying, “Keep my wife’s name out your f—king mouth.” In response, Rock attempted to laugh the situation off before promising not to mention Jada.

The reporter provides multiple facts and figures. He also presents different viewpoints on the incident, quoting celebrities that agree with what Will Smith did and some that stand with Chris Rock and found it an unnecessary act of violence. However, the reporter remains a little biased against Will Smith's action and towards Jada and Will Smith's 'open' relationship mockery. An example is a quote the reporter used from Rebel Wilson.

"Will Smith won for King Richard, but I thought his best performance over the past year was being OK with all his wife's boyfriends," she joked from the stage, a reference to the couple's apparently open relationship.

Another example would be the reporting mentioning Jada Smith and August Alsina's affair that had nothing to do with the incident nor the headline. That's another way the reporter could have influenced the reader's opinion.

In conclusion, the article is well detailed informative. It also presents both viewpoints on the incident, however, it may have been a little out of context and biased in a way. The reporter easily went out of context to manipulate and influence the reader's opinion on the matter. At the end of the day, this is what brings attention/eyes to these newspapers. People in general just like drama as it's entertaining, and the article was literally placed in the Entertainment & Arts section (no surprise).
