An activist investor is a private or institutional investor that wants to gain a controlling interest in a targeted company by investing seats on the business of the board of directors. activist investors are very active in politics and are willing to put their money where their mouth is by putting their money into political action issues. They do this in hopes that moderate leaders will get change on key issues such as gun control, energy deregulation, and financial reform.

Activists differ from institutional investors in that they do not have the benefit of a diversified portfolio. Activists tend to be very focused on one industry or corporation. This means that they are unlikely to be involved with multiple companies if they are not making money. Additionally, most advocates of a given cause are focused on one business. They also tend to have little patience for long term investment in businesses because most typically do not see returns on their investments for several years.

Activists are grouped according to whether they are technically considered to be "smart" or not. The difference between these types of activists and regular investors is that regular investors tend to base their investing strategies on data available to them, which makes their decisions based on what the market shows at any given point. Activists, on the other hand, base their actions on a principle. Unfortunately, there is no concrete principle because there is no known proven theory or technology that causes the behavior that they claim is caused by their activism. Unfortunately, some folks who claim to be social change warriors and what is an activist only do what is politically correct. Unfortunately, there are some folks on the Internet who will only engage in rhetoric, name calling, and threats against others in order to gain attention and credibility.

This is what is known as being a bully. In order to be considered an activist investor, you have to be willing to engage in some questionable tactics in order to get your point across. Some examples of these questionable tactics are doing a series of public company splits to create a stir, using questionable stock manipulation techniques, writing controversial articles or blog posts to drive up sales, or using illegal stock scams. Some other tactics that are being used by some "public companies" are paying blogger websites to promote their information, paying celebrities to talk about their companies or paying Internet surfers to send them emails about their products.

Activism has gotten so out of control that many traditional business people are calling on activists to go beyond being a public company shill and get proactive and start engaging in grass-roots types of political action. Some are even calling on activist investors to go beyond being a regular investor and start participating in movements and issues that directly affect their businesses.
