Role of New Media in European Journalism
The Digital News Initiative (DNI) is a European organisation established by Google to support high quality journalism through innovative technology and innovation. Agency encompasses an "Innovation Lab" worth up to six million Euros, which in its first year issued grants to 4 specific projects in European news organisations. This article focuses on one of the three DNI projects, the European Journalism Steering Group. This is a non-profit membership organisation that brings together European media owners and managers from different regions. The steering group meets once a month to discuss the state of European journalism.

This is an initiative launched by the European Commission with the goal of improving the quality of European journalism. The Digital News Initiative brings together European media owners and managers from different sectors - blogs, print, television and radio. These stakeholders aim to enhance the participation of the audience at a wider level. The digital news initiative also promotes the development of new platforms and business models.

In its first year the digital news initiative invested more than twelve million Euros on the development of new platforms for European online newspapers. These platforms will enable web publishers and bloggers to report from across the continent. The digital news initiative also developed the europe blog, a platform that allows European columnists to write about current affairs, politics and business in an innovative way. Blogs can now also be moderated by paid-members. The European Journalism Steering Group is now trying to raise funds to support further innovations and expansion of the initiatives.

The European Working Group on Innovation (EUDGI) was established in spring 2021. The working group brings together twenty representatives of different sectors of the European media industry. These businessmen belong to different countries of Europe, including the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, United Kingdom, Sweden, Finland and Austria. This working group aims to create a platform for European companies to come up with innovative ideas for digital news and innovation. Over the next years the working group will be discussing various topics related to digital news and innovation.

Another innovation is the European Journalism Week. It is scheduled annually and takes place between September and October in Brussels. Agency and conferences addressing topics related to European journalism. For instance, the Working Group on Innovation will be organizing an exhibition on the topics of journalism and innovation. Agency on the agenda include digital journalism and the challenges facing the industry.

The Digital Single Market Strategy Competition was established in May 2021. This competition aims to foster innovation and technology convergence in the single market. The competition is aiming to increase the level of participation of small and medium sized businesses in the digital Single Market. As part of the strategy the business interests of small and medium-sized publishers will be considered. The aim is to foster more innovation, competition and collaboration in the Single Market.

In the business interest, the Digital Single Market Strategy Competition pursues a goal of reducing the differences between different national market areas and increases the competitive advantage of European companies. As a part of the Journalism and Innovation element of the Digital Single Market Strategy, the participating publishers will be asked to develop new models of online journalism and online information publishing. They will then present their ideas and concepts to an independent jury. Agency winning concept will be taken into consideration, along with other suitable applications, for implementation in the Single Market.

Another strand of the Digital News Initiative that is worth mentioning is the European Journalism Forum. The Forum brings together European journalism organizations, concerned parties and stakeholders from different regions and sectors. The forum also brings experts from other disciplines into this forum to exchange views and experiences. The participants of the forum include senior managers from many publishers, public editors, media specialists and academic experts. The forum is organized by the European Publishers Association.
