You know what they say regarding people who repeat the same thing but expect different results. This is often the standard definition of "insanity". Unfortunately, this is what many of our youth soccer coaches experience. They continue to do the same old thing year in and year out, with no change in their frustratingly poor or inconsistent results. I went through this post-season assessment in my first years of coaching youth soccer. My answer was always that I needed better football players as the solution to my problem. My thoughts were that all I needed to solve my problem was a better player for x, a better player for y, and more motivated kids. It was always the fault of the kids, I just needed a good team and we would succeed.

Some youth football coaches believe that the more players, the better. Many of these coaches believe that if they have more players, they will have a better chance of finding a star to lead their team. A local team had 40-60 players and lost most of its games. Poor coaching can often overcome large talent pools. One of our Omaha league teams was faced with a team that had 52 kids. Most teams in the league suit up from 22-35 players. High numbers are a guarantee of headaches for the coach. Very low numbers can lead to the same.

A coach recently asked me how I would beat a zone defense in youth soccer. It was a very generic question. I told him first to recognize that it was a Zone Defense. How do you do that?

I'm now in the process of doing research to fix areas of deficiency in our program. I am working on improving my communication skills with my coaches. I feel that we aren?t using the talents of our coaches as effectively as possible or utilizing their unique skill sets as human beings. I am searching for answers everywhere, from great coaching legends to innovators and captains of American Industry. We also depend too much on our coordinators for basic reads, adjustments, game planning. There has got to be a better way of doing it than we are doing now.

Research the schools/programs of interest to you. If possible, start the process before your junior year of high school. This will allow you to move through the process without feeling rushed.

You can help others if you feel you are not ready for the role of head coach. As an assistant, it will allow you to experience the coaching process. This experience will help you learn how to deal effectively with your players, how you train your players, and the game plans you will use to win.

The best player-to-coach ratio is between 5 and 6. 7 coaches is required to coach 40 kids on a youth football team. visit here to find enough coaches to get the team on the same page. Because of the dispersed nature of the assistant coaches and head coach, teams this large don't see their players reach their full potential.
