In the early 1900s, Acadian French mill workers moved to the community. Learn More became the mission church for Lisbon and Portland. The Reverend James A. Flynn, who headed these missions, purchased a house on Cumberland Street near the church. The Sacred HeART was dedicated on Labor Day, November 25, 1929. The Sacred Heart Church was dedicated on Labor Day. Since the renaming, a historical retrospective has been written and will be on display.
Originally a parish, the Sacred Heart Church was designed in the grand Romanesque style. The architect was Charles Knight, Sr., who used local stone. The cornerstone was blessed on Labor Day in 1921. Construction continued for the next couple of years with the help of many men of the parish. The local economy caused construction to be slowed down a bit. Ultimately, it was dedicated in 1929 and the parish received a historic retrospective written by the pastor.
