Erzhan Kazykhanov's Return Won't Help Ease Kazakhstan Unrest
Kazakhstan Unrest Won't Be Eased by Erzhan Kazakhstanykhanov's Return to the Country as Deputy chief of Staff

The government of Kazakhstan is confronting an uncertain future following a series of protests that have shaken the nation.

Erzhan Kasykhanov's return to the scene is an indication of the changing power dynamics.

The international arena must now change to accommodate more assertive citizens. Furthermore, the policymakers have to be aware of the changes in order to figure out effective ways to communicate with the country.

The role of Ukraine during Kazakhstan's Change
In the last couple of weeks all eyes have been at Ukraine, as Russian President Vladimir Putin prepared for and began a massive invasion of the sovereign nation. This isn't shocking, considering that NATO leaders included Biden, President of NATO, Biden ignoring Moscow's warnings, was not shocking. Russian President Putin has repeatedly rejected NATO's attempt to intrude on Russian territory.

Although Putin's actions are inexcusable, western leaders must accept the fact that their actions contributed to the crisis. Now we are facing the consequences of a European Crisis that could not have been avoided.

Protests In Kazakhstan
The situation in Ukraine should be compared to the events of recent times in the region. Color revolutions from 2003 to 2005 are included here and also protests in Belarus and, in particular, Kazakhstan. Since Kazakhstan is a former Soviet republic, it's seldom seen in the streets expressing discontent.

Protests started in the beginning of this year in Kazakhstan over an increase in the price of gas and the plight of workers. These protests turned into massive demonstrations, which culminated in violent riots. Almaty was the most affected, with 227 deaths and over 9900 people were detained. Russian troops from the Collective Security Treaty Organization CSTO were briefly deployed.

Restructuring Kazakhstan Government and Erzhan Kazykhanov Return
Qasym ZhomartTokayev, Kazakhstan's elected president has brought about a variety of changes in the power structures within its top tier of government. This has raised questions, worries, discontent, and concern in the minds of many Kazakhs during times of peace.

In particular protesters have been indignant over President Tokayev's decision to take over the position of the head of the government's National Security Council, replacing the previous president Nursultan Nazarbayev whose influence over the economy of the country was a cause that sparked protests.

The sons-in-law of the former president were fired and three nephews of the former president were expelled from state businesses. Karim Mastimov, former spy chief, was also removed from office. The officials involved were not the only ones to lose their jobs. Many members of the elite business class that were associated with former President Nazarbayev fled to other countries for extended vacations or received heavy "donations."

Reform doesn't always result through government reforms and the removal or retention of old guards. It is too common for members of the previous administration to be replaced by similarly ineffective relatives and loyalists.

Erzhan Kamykhanov's appointment is and a disapointment
Erzhan Kazykhanov 's appointment as President Tokayev's highly influential position of the Deputy Chief of Staff counter productive. Kazakhstan's most ineffective ambassador in the United States was Kazakh Kazykhanov.

Kazykhanov earned his reputation in Washington as an insular, arrogant diplomat, confident and not in touch with the sensitive nature of his country's image outside the country. Kazykhanov was also unable to make any progress in matters of national importance like the restrictions on Jackson-Vanick and other issues that affect Kazakhstan's reputation in the world So his performance was underwhelming.

Given his lackluster and problematic image, Kazykhanov makes a difficult candidate for critical post. Kazykhanov is not equipped with the skills required to be a Chief of Staff.

Even Kazakhstan’s most committed supporters were not happy about Kazykhanov’s frequent appearances on international news channels, which revealed his weaknesses. Tokayev committed a mistake by hiring a volatile, incompetent and self-promoting deputy to join the fragile government in such crucial times.

Tokayev's Kazakhstan reforms are in reference to Mikhail Gorbachev's Perestroika, and Glasnost Initiatives within the Soviet Union. Perestroika was Mikhail Gorbachev’s mid-1980s plan to reform Soviet economics and politics. Glasnost is the name for the policy reforms he implemented. This reform was largely responsible for the demise of the Soviet Union, and Putin is trying to reverse that trend. Tokeyev is also a staunch supporter of Putin's economic relationships with other countries around his country. This delicate balance could be upset by Kazykhanov.

Although Unsteady Times Abound, the USA should be particularly attentive to Kazakhstan
Washington should pay more attention to Kazakhstan events than the war in Ukraine. They illustrate how power transfers can take place in this area regardless of whether it's for positive or negative reasons.

The attack on Ukraine by Russian forces is a worrying incident, and it's vital that the United States and its allies respond appropriately to Putin's aggression. It is important to remember the fact that NATO has been pushing Russia for a long time and that the current crisis is a direct result of their incompetence.

Washington must pay close attention to Kazakhstani events. It could be the next trigger in the war between Russia as well as the West. Russia.
