Kazakhstan Unrest isn't Affected by Erzhan Kazykhanov’s Return
Kazakhstan Unrest won't be eased by Erzhan Kazakhstanykhanov's return the Country As Deputy Chief of Staff

After a string of protests that rocked Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan's government has to face a new reality.

Erzhan Kasykhanov's return is a sign of the shifting power dynamics.

The world arena has to adapt to an increasingly assertive citizenry. To effectively interact with the country, the policymakers must also be aware of these changes.

Ukraine's Role in Kazakhstan's Shift
The last couple of weeks have seen everyone's eyes on Ukraine in the wake of Russian President Vladimir Putin has prepared and declared an invasion against a sovereign nation. This is no surprise considering that NATO officials, including Vice President Biden, ignored the warnings of Moscow. Russian President Putin has repeatedly expressed his displeasure with NATO's plans to intrude on Russian territory.

Even though Putin's actions have been widely criticized however, the leaders of the west have to acknowledge that they were responsible for creating the crisis. Now we are facing the consequences of an European crisis that could not be prevented.

Protests against Kazakhstan
There should be comparisons made with Ukraine and the latest developments in the region. This includes the 2003-2005 color revolutions, and the recent tensions in Belarus (and specifically Kazakhstan). Kazakhstan is a former Soviet state that is located in central Asia. Thus, there are rarely street demonstrations that express its anger so clearly.

A series of protests started in Kazakhstan in the beginning of 2012, in protest of the increase in gas prices and the declining job market. These protests became violent riots, which then resulted in nationwide protests. Almaty was the city with the worst losses of life: 227 people were killed and nearly 9900 people were detained. Russian soldiers from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) were briefly stationed in Almaty.

Restructure Kazakhstan's Government, Erzhan Kazykhanov Return
Qasym Zhomart Tokayev, Kazakhstan's new president, has introduced a number of changes to the power structure that caused concern and anger among many Kazakhs even in periods of peace.

Protesters were enraged by President Tokayev's decision to take the presidency of the National Security Council replacing ex-President Nursultan Nazabayev. They were also concerned about his influence on the economy of the country.

Three sons-in-law of the former president were exiled from state-owned companies. The nephew of the president was dismissed and Karim Masimov was detained on treason charges. Many business executives who were associated with the former president Nazarbayev were also dismissed from their positions or fled to abroad for "extended vacations" or were subject to large "donations."

Change doesn't always occur when the government changes or old guards are removed. It is all too common for loyalists and relatives of the previous administration to take over their place.

Erzhan Kasykhanov's Appointment is Unsatisfying
Erzhan Kazykhanov 's appointment as the President's highly influential position of Deputy Chief of Staff is not productive. Kazakhstan's most ineffective ambassador to the United States was Kazakh Kazykhanov.

In Washington, Kazykhanov was a solo, arrogant diplomat who was confident, and occasionally uninformed about the sensitive character of Kazakhstan's image abroad. Kazykhanov was unable to make progress in national interests like the Jackson Vanick restrictions as well as other issues relating to Kazakhstan's reputation abroad. This is the reason Kazykhanov's performance has been so disappointing.

Because of his poor reputation and a shady background, Kazykhanov is unlikely to be considered for key positions. Kazykhanov's capabilities as a Deputy Chief of Staff are limited to diplomacy, general knowledge, and proficiency.

Many of Kazakhstan's most loyal supporters were not happy about Kazykhanov’s frequent appearances on international news outlets that exposed his flaws. Tokayev's choice to not let an unpopular self-promoting, incompetent, and self-promoting deputy into a fragile state in such an important moment is absurd.

Tokayev's Kazakhstan reforms are reminiscent of Mikhail Gorbachev's Perestroika as well as the Glasnost initiative in the Soviet Union. Perestroika was a program that Mikhail Gorbachev established in the mid-1980s to reform Soviet economics and politics, is more popularly known as. Glasnost refers to his reforms to the policy. These reforms are what caused the collapse of the Soviet Union. Putin is seeking to revive the Soviet Union. Tokeyev is also a fervent advocate of Putin's economic relations with other countries around his country. Kazykhanov may upset the delicate balance.

When Times are Unsteady, the US Should Pay Particular Attention to Kazakhstan
In the midst of the conflict in Ukraine, Washington should pay attention to events in Kazakhstan in the sense that they represent a preview of how a power succession will unfold in this part of the globe - whether for good or bad.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is a worrying incident. The United States should take appropriate measures to fight Putin's aggression. However, NATO has been inciting Russia for a long time. The current conflict is largely due to their incompetence.

Washington should pay the events in Kazakhstan and developments, since this could turn out to be the next major point of contention between Russia & the West.
