Kazakhstan Unrest Won't Be Effected By Erzhan Kazakhstanykhanov's Return
Kazakhstan Unrest Won't Be Eased by Erzhan Kazakhstanykhanov Returning to the Country as Deputy chief of Staff

Following a string of protests, the government of Kazakhstan now is confronted with a new reality.

Erzhan Kazakhstanykhanov's Return demonstrates how power dynamics have changed.

The world arena must adjust to an increasingly assertive and active citizenry. In addition, policymakers need be cognizant of these developments and devise effective methods to interact with their country.

The Role of Kazakhstan's Ukraine in Kazakhstan's Shift
The last couple of weeks have seen everyone's eyes on Ukraine as Russian President Vladimir Putin has prepared and declared an invasion against a sovereign country. It's not surprising, considering the way NATO leaders, including President Biden ignored the warnings of Moscow. Russian President Putin has repeatedly opposed NATO's attempt to intrude on Russian territory.

Even though Putin's actions are unacceptable western leaders must admit the fact that their actions contributed to the crisis. It is fair to say, that we're suffering the effects of an European crisis which could have been prevented.

Protests in Kazakhstan
The current situation in Ukraine should be compared to the experiences of recent years in the region. The colors revolutions of 2003-2005 and the unrest that occurred in Belarus as well as Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan is an ex- Soviet state situated in central Asia. Thus there aren't many street protests that show its discontent so clearly.

A series of protests started in Kazakhstan in early 2012 due to the rising gas prices and the decline in the job market. The protests turned violent riots and rallies across the nation. Almaty witnessed the biggest loss of life, with 227 people dead and over 9900 held. Russian troops from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) were briefly stationed in Almaty.

Restructure Kazakhstan's Government, Erzhan Kazykhanov Return
Qasym ZhomartTokayev, Kazakhstan's elected president, has made several modifications to the power structures within the ruling elite. This has raised questions, worries, discontent and worries in the minds of many Kazakhs during times of peace.

Protesters were particularly angry about the decision of President Tokayev to succeed the former president Nursultan Nagabev as the chief of the government's National Security Council. This was despite his influence on the country's economy.

The sons of the former president were fired and three of his nephews were barred from state-owned businesses. Karim Mastimov, former spy chief, was also defrocked. Numerous business elite members who were associated with former President Nazarbayev had their jobs resigned or fled to other countries for long vacations, or were given large "donations."

Change in government and the elimination of the old guards do not always mean reform. It's all too typical for loyalists as well as relatives of the former administration to take over their place.

Erzhan Kasykhanov's Appointment Unsatisfying
The selection of Erzhan Kazykhanov to the highly powerful position of Deputy Chief Of Staff by the president Tokayev is counterproductive. Kazakh Kazykhanov, Kazakhstan's least effective ambassador to the United States, was Kazakh Kazykhanov.

Washington resents Kazykhanov for being an arrogant, aloof diplomat, too self-confident, and often uninformed with the image of Kazakhstan beyond the borders of the country. Kazykhanov was unable to make progress in national interests, such as the Jackson Vanick restrictions and other issues that affect the image of Kazakhstan abroad. This is the reason Kazykhanov's performance has been so disappointing.

Kazykhanov is not a likely person to be a candidate for positions of critical significance due to his shady and unbecoming reputation. Kazykhanov's abilities as a deputy Chief of Staff is restricted to diplomacy and vast knowledge, and expertise.

The most ardent supporters of Kazakhstan have expressed their concern over Kazykhanov's frequent appearances in major news outlets around the world which expose his weaknesses. Tokayev committed a mistake by hiring an unstable, incompetent and self-promoting deputy to join the fragile government in such crucial moments.

Tokayev's Kazakhstan reforms are reminiscent of Mikhail Gorbachev's Perestroika and Glasnost initiatives in the Soviet Union. Perestroika is Mikhail Gorbachev's mid-1980s reform program to improve Soviet economics and politics. Glasnost refers specifically to his policy change. The reforms he instituted led to the collapse of the Soviet Union. Putin is trying to restore the Soviet Union. Tokeyev is also a staunch advocate of Putin's economic relations with the countries that surround his country. This delicate balance may be upset by Kazykhanov.

When Times are Unsteady The US should pay particular attention to Kazakhstan
Washington should pay attention to Kazakhstan's actions during the conflict in Ukraine. They're a preview of what a power-swap might look like in this part of the world, either for better or worse.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is a worrying incident. The United States should take appropriate measures to fight Putin's aggressiveness. We must not forget the fact that NATO has been provocative to Russia for a long time, and this crisis is in part a consequence of their own mistakes.

Washington should pay the events in Kazakhstan in the event that they turn out to be the next major tension point in the war between Russia & the West.
