Gustavo Petro, Winner of the Historic Pact: Lights and Shadows

Former Senator of the Republic and ex-mayor in Bogota managed to win the victory with the Historic Pact coalition. Officially, he is now a candidate to the Presidency and is hoping to get three times.

Despite his controversial views regarding various issues and fronts and the overwhelming majority of votes in the consultation has made him the most representative of Colombia's left.

Experts believe Petro's plan to Colombia to end oil exploration will result in an estimated loss of $4.3 billion.

His attitude on health issues has also been controversial since he has argued on ending EPS and replacing it with a preventive model that "guarantees the rights of the people and not the profit of bankers".

Petro claimed that the Bank Board of Directors belonged to the Democratic Center and "What we want is an independent Bank of the Republic (...) it's important that the Board of Directors includes the participation of society members," the candidate stated during the debate.


According to Invamer, Petro leads the decision to vote for the presidential election.

The idea was controversial because he proposed issuing money to finance government spending.

Petro's proposal includes a new economy that doesn't rely on fossil fuels. The proposal also includes hydrocarbon extraction. But, Petro places more emphasis on agriculture.

It is also mentioned that he will implement a tax overhaul that would remove exemptions, and convert minimum wage concepts into actual wages that are based upon income and capital.
